Mweb News Server - It ain't workin' no more!

Also i don't know why they just give us more connections?
Surely if we donwload stuff from them it saves me the trouble from grabbing over an international link?

Here is my update:

I actually moved from Somerset West to Durbanville. So I'm on a new line, with a different PC, but still the old account.
It still doesn't work!!
I again used both news.mweb.co.za & the IP. And with different clients. The IP connects but disconnects immediately. news.mweb.co.za doesn't connect at all.

And if Mweb Guy asks me one more time if I have a problem...Don't know if they noticed that I actually started this Post because of THIS problem.

I think I have given Mweb enough info about my stuffs through out this post. If they can't solve it by now (2months later) then they probably can't or won't.
 
Oh and to top it off... I can hardly even browse normally anymore. Browsing will be fine for a bit, then just stop working completely. Every site timesout. The only way I can rectify this is by restarting my router. But this happens every 2 to 3 hours, which is getting very frustrating.
And no, it's not the line. My parents used a telkom account before I switched my mweb account here, and they had no such problem. I put DNS settings on Auto Detect, so that cant be the problem either.
P2P speeds started off okay, but are now creeping along at terrible speeds...all hours of the day.
When I'm moving to my new apartment at the end of this month, I'm going to switch over to WA's uncapped...will see how that goes.

Good morning Empie, please note that we have tested the CPT news server and we cannot replicate your problem. Please provide me the answers to the following questions and I will have a technical specialist contact you to troubleshoot your hardware.


Are your DNS settings on automatic?
Are you never able to access the server, or is it just slow at certain times? If it's never what error messages do you get when attempting to establish a thread?
Have you tried disabling your firewall?
Have you tried alternative news client software?
Are you able to ping news.mweb.co.za and what IP does it resolve to?

Hi drukkie

It's a good question and I'd like to give you a really candid answer to this one so here goes:

Firstly in terms of the cost benefit of you downloading something from the news server or from an international source there is very little difference from our point of view.

The MWEB news server itself is a free value added service that we provide and there is a very definite cost attached to providing it not just in terms of the server and storage infrastructure, but also the Giganews feed that services it.

We know that this is something that is seen as a 'traditional VAS' that ISPs offer and as such we have committed a fair amount of resources to having a news feed available and to provide a reasonable experience when accessing it.

However it really wouldn't be fair to compare the download speeds and the number of connections allowed per customer to any of the subscription based feeds available out there.

Are you never able to access the server, or is it just slow at certain times? If it's never what error messages do you get when attempting to establish a thread? --It always connects, sticks to 0Kb/s, and then disconnects again within a second. Rince and repeat... No error messages.

Have you tried alternative news client software? --Yes, using Alt.Binz, but tried GrabIt and SABnz as well.

Are you able to ping news.mweb.co.za and what IP does it resolve to? --Yes, 196.28.182.50 I've tried connecting using that IP instead of 196.28.78.229. Still nothing.

And if you were wondering... WA and IS news servers work, already tested. So it can't be my hardware.
 
I dont want to jinx anything, but yesterday I tried the mweb news server again, and guess what! It WORKED (TOUCH WOOD)! It worked for the first time since signing up with Mweb. I wanted to step outside to see if it was raining gumdrops and jelly tots!
The download speed fluctuates massively but it seems so get the job done. Hopefully everything will just keep working.

Thanks Empie, ok one last thing, can you drop me a PM with your username - I'd like to get some monitoring going so we can get the engineers to track your connection attempts to the server. There must be a logical explanation for this.
 
Yikes my connection was UBER slow this last 1-2 weeks looks better now, but still nowhere near I want it :) oh well

Hi Hazard

Have you run through the checklist I provided in an earlier post?

Of particular importance is that your DNS settings are on automatic. The reason for this is that the resolution of news.mweb.co.za to either the Cape town, or JHB server cluster is determined by DNS assignment and as I've mentioned before Cape Town users will not be able to use the JHB server and vice versa. To be on the safe side clear any cached DNS settings from your router and set it back to auto assigned and see if that helps.

If you do a tracert to news.mweb.co.za you should be able to see by the hops it goes through if it's resolving to the server closest to you.

Thanks for the call today(or yesterday)! Was awesome chatting with you.
I played around with the DNS settings a bit. Tried different DNS IP's that I could remember. And also tried it again on automatic settings. No luck unfortunately. I'm now running 2 connections to news.mweb.co.za, which resolves to 196.82.182.50 when i do a tracert on it. I presume this is the CT cluster's IP? I'm also running the other 2 connections using the same IP itself.
Will keep them running incase you need to monitor.

Here are my tracert results just incase:

What is the different in using the two different username realms?

A trace route on the @dslmweb.co.za goes via your new DBN IPC. (20ms higher latency since the implementation of the DBN IPC)
A trace route on the @mweb.co.za goes via your CPT IPC. (lower latency)

I am in Richmond KZN which is about 100KM from Durban CBD. So routing via Cape Town which is 1200KM away seems better?

Just a question, otherwise still happy with MWEB!!!
