Mweb News Server - It ain't workin' no more!

031 here as well, my news speeds were quite slow this evening, rebooted my modem after reading that post and its back to normal now. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated.

Good Evening Lucifir, I have had 3 queries pertaining to our news server this afternoon and they are all from the 031 area.

May I delete your current session, as I would like to verify if your experience improves when connecting with a new IP?

You can go ahead :) ... although I already tried this by changing my login from dslmweb to just mweb on the router ... but right now .. anything that can help will be great :)

Just tried rebooting again.. no luck ... even when setting it back to dslmweb and getting a new IP :(

just rebooted again ... and just in the few seconds that after the login, I was able to connect and even grab an article, but after that, the same error ... not sure what could cause that!!

Hi Lucifir, your session was deleted and I have recreated your Port. Please reboot for a short period, 2 to 3 min and please provide me the relevant feedback.

I already logged a call earlier .. and it was apparently already escalated ... so hopefully they already working on it ... but so far ... no joy .... it definitely seems to be an area prob ... does the KZN/durban area get a specific set of IP range?? maybe we going through a IPC that is corrupting the data or something??

At the moment I'm not sure what's causing the problem, however it does seem to be specific to our KZN clients. I have provided more than one example to our network team. I hope we are able to identify and resolve the problem in due course.

Ok news servers just started work about 10 mins ago....
But very very slow....
Runs at 20 to 40 kilobytes for about 10 seconds then drops for 5 seconds and starts all over again,
tried about 6 different files.....

Atleast it's going...

Oh and I am on the 033 212 (Richmond NTL IMAX, KZN Exchange)

I was told, quite categorically, that MWEB considered the news servers old technology and they were not going to invest any time and effort in fixing problems. What has changed?

Hi Guys,

I have not yet received any feedback from our network team.
I have provided them with all the detail and info I have received.
As soon as I receive any update I will post it here.

kind regards,
MWEB Guy

People please make sure you stop your anti-virus from checking any NNTP traffic under your mail scanner/shield, just turned mine off, now i am getting 80 - 100kilobytes but it is still going for 10 seconds and drops to 0kb for 5 seconds then it repeats again. still not 100% perfect but atleast it's faster than torrents on Mweb's shaped uncapped.....

Mweb guy why are torrents shaped to death on these products, a few month ago i use to get about 100kb during the day and almost full line speed after 8/9pm now i get a constant 20kb no matter what time of day it is?

Done some playing around,

i get the following

news.mweb.co.za - Redirects to views.mweb.co.za (196.2.42.10 & 196.2.42.8 & 196.2.42.9)
news.mweb.net - gives ip of 196.28.78.229
news1.mweb.co.za - Rediects to news.saix.net (196.43.2.61)
news01.mweb.co.za - gives ip of 196.28.78.231
news02.mweb.co.za - gives ip of 196.28.78.232
news03.mweb.co.za - gives ip of 196.28.78.233
news04.mweb.co.za - gives ip of 196.28.78.234
news05.mweb.co.za - gives ip of 196.28.78.235
news06.mweb.co.za - gives ip of 196.28.78.236

I thought there were only two news servers?

Thanks for all the info Hummer, please also provide me your MWEB email address please.

Ok i think i figured something thing out, Edited the host file on my win 7 machine,

Forced
news.mweb.co.za
news1.mweb.co.za
news01.mweb.co.za
news02.mweb.co.za
news03.mweb.co.za
news04.mweb.co.za
news05.mweb.co.za
news06.mweb.co.za

to the IP of 196.28.78.229

so now when doing a nslookup all those addresses are showing the IP 196.28.78.229

and now it's flying @ 400KB!!! seems Mweb DNS are randomly forwarding each of those address to news.saix.net then authentication fails and so does the download....

Well the SAIX news servers would reject mweb customers...

Lucifir, my apologies for this weekend and we do understand your frustration. I promise though, that you guys in DBN will be having an improvement in your exsperience on our Network ;)

Watch this space!!

Thankfully i have just seen this thread. My downloads have been broken since Friday it think it was.

Well some positive news is my news server connection has been restored for the past week or so. So I guess they fixed what ever problem they had with the ssw exchange. :)
