Mweb News Server - It ain't workin' no more!

Server was fairly dead till 12ish today, timeouts galore

Oddly enough, I actually got all 4 connections going. Connected sometime during the day. Will see how long it lasts though.
Will keep you informed if it's fixed or not.

No such luck for me. I left it on for a few hours last night, but couldnt hold a connection. It's still good news that yours got started eventually. Is it still going??

Yeah it is. It's not perfect sailing yet though. It still drops connections every now and then, but normally connects AND starts downloading almost instantly. I even closed it down for a bit and started it up again just to see if it will continue, and it did.

The only thing I can think of that I did was disconnect my main hard drive. It was failing to boot up, so took it out and put it back in. Didn't really look at Alt.Binz right after that, but since the next day atleast it was downloading.
I doubt strongly it has anything to do with it though, can't see how it could. But that's pretty much all I can think off.

I can get it to start downloading, but it immidiately disconnects. I left it on the whole night last night and nothing. I think I did about 74kb. Dont know waht else to try. I've reinstalled news clients, I've used different news clients.. all that's left is to format and reinstall OS and see if that helps. I'm kindof hoping it wont get to that, but I'm running out of options. And if that doenst work I'l have to start fighting with Mweb again. What an absolute mission!
Maybe I should try disconnecting my drive :P

False alarm....it stopped working again. Been down for most of the day already it seems. :(

i give up.

MMM, seems that I also can't get a connection to the MWeb Server. Ping's just fine, on both the url and IP, but NZB client just sits there staring at me.

I'm on Kubuntu, running Kwooty.

I noticed someone getting a very strange IP for our news server in one of the above posts.

We have news servers hosted in both our Cape Town and JHB data centres to balance the load between our two IPC links. In order to resolve the correct server it is recommended that you leave your DNS settings on automatic and use our assigned DNS addresses.

If this is not the case please make the necessary changes and let us know how it goes.

Also note that server access is actually restricted based on the IPC node you are on (so Cape Town users cannot access the JHB server and vice versa). This was implemented due to the fact that some ingenious customers were doubling up their news yield by connecting to the IP of both servers at once :p

Therefore if you do insist on connecting to the IP of the server, make sure it's the one you're meant to be on :)

Thanks
Will

I don't use the IP and am still not able to use the mweb news server. I'm going to format my system over the weekend and setup everything from scratch to make dead sure the problem is not on my side. will report back next week.

Empie, can you download from the mweb news server yet?

guiver can you possibly run through the following list for me:

Are your DNS settings on automatic?
Are you never able to access the server, or is it just slow at certain times? If it's never what error messages do you get when attempting to establish a thread?
Have you tried disabling your firewall?
Have you tried alternative news client software?
Are you able to ping news.mweb.co.za and what IP does it resolve to?
do you route via our JHB, or CPT IPC node?

Thanks
Will

I am also unable to connect to the news servers at all!

I was assigned the following DNS Servers
196.28.75.200
196.28.182.10

My username ends with @dslmweb.co.za

and i can ping news.mweb.co.za (196.43.2.61)

Trace route goes via JHB node...

????

Ok just done some tests,

Tried my netgear router, reset and tried both my unshaped and shaped mweb accounts each with no luck
put my SAIX & IS accounts in the netgear NNTP runs at just over 400kb/s

Did the same with my Edimax router and got the same results.

Tried with my laptop Win 7 and desktop Win XP
Tried with GrabIT and newsbin got the same result!

Asked my brother in JHB to try with on his Mweb ADSL (took a bit of explaining) and he also cannot connect to the mweb news servers.

So i can firmly say it is not a setup issue on my end.

Please Mweb get this sorted!

I have the same issue as Hummercellc, getting error "Unexpected error while downloading body", so it connects fine ... just cannot get the data. I also tried different clients with the same result. Was working fine for me yesterday, but this started this morning. I logged a call with mweb around 2pm, but still nothing. This is annoying!!
Could it be a KZN issue??

Good Evening Lucifir, I have had 3 queries pertaining to our news server this afternoon and they are all from the 031 area.

May I delete your current session, as I would like to verify if your experience improves when connecting with a new IP?
