So i've been without ADSL for a while and i now have the phone line installed in the new place. So the question now is which uncapped 384k offering to go for?

I am not interested in faster speeds but still want to use news servers. Yes, i know it is uncapped so i can download from elsewhere but i am happy with NSs. The question therefore is what sort of speeds are you 384k users out there getting on the mweb server? Are these speeds all day? Are evenings and weekends full speed? And do any other uncapped offerings include a news server or do you have to pay for an international one?

I am used to about 38K on the SAIX news server with my Telkom local. Is this unknown on the uncapped offerings?

My download is very slow (with mweb news sever and/or a overseas free news server)
I am on MWEB 384k uncapped and only get 10 kb/s (out of 40kb/s line speed) in peak times and maximum 15kb/s after hours.

I have tried with a CAPPED Mweb DSL account with the same results. However, if I switch to a telkom CAPPED ADSL account (using free overseas news sever) I get full line speed.

Seems it does not depend on which news server I use, but that it is rather shaped by protocol.

Anyone else experience this?

free news servers you say?? mind sharing those with us?? :-)

Im on a 4 MB line...get about 60-100 during office hours...150 from 18h00 - 23:00 and 350 from then on...
was on a 384 line and it's not worth it...you will chug along at 10 like the guy said above...i havn't tried a paid for service on the 384 though. Maybe get the prepaid account from acstraweb?

But even using the free news server is slow [although through a TELKOM account it runs full speed (40kb/s), even during the day)] which tells you a prepaid service will also be slow. It really looks like MWEB is shaping NNTP port 119 NO MATTER WHICH SERVER YOU USE :(

@Shiveer, have a look at just4today.net, they change the password for their news server (news.just4today.net) daily and you have to check their webpage. I have only used it for testing my line speed, but seems they have most binaries with about 10 days retention.
