Mweb Shaping Beyond All Belief?

All I can say is that last year I was averaging around 1.5GB a day through NNTP (Mweb and Download2day servers) and this year I am very lucky to get 800MB. That's a 46% decrease in total data transfer. During the day the line averages <1kbps; from around 23:00 to 06:00 it picks up to full line speed.

I did test out the 4mbps service for a few months only to be dissappointed in the overall performance (and shaping)

Going from R 349 per month to R 629 per month for 384kbps unshaped is a bit

WOW

Full speed from 23:00 to 06:00.. I am on a 4 MEg line and I dont get full speed in those times.. I get just above half my line speed.

Last year I did.. though

The 384kbps unshaped package is R499.00 pm.

When I was on the 4mbps the highest speed I got through NNTP was about 1.8mbps. I eventually installed a 'PRTG program thing' that monitored the line (actually the NIC) utilisation. You could actually see how the graph dropped at exactly 06:00 - then 07:00 - then 08:00 until it was running at 230kbps; it would run like that until about 23:00 and go back up to 1.8mbps....

Im on a 384 uncapped unshapped account for some time now but recently discovered that my p2p downloads have dropped to nothing greater than 1Kbps if i'm lucky.
This started last week Friday.
MWEB reset my account, refreshed ports etc but still nothing.
They escalated it but no news from them still.
Was wondering if anyone else has the same problem.

My 384 unshaped uncapped account is still running consistently at full speed using NNTP (don't use torrents). No problems at all thus far for me.

Something must have happened today..........
Might be that their shapping is a bit screwed or they woke up.... which is more likely???

Might also be that I have been complaining that they are still billing me on a 4 mbps all inclusive account when they've migrated me back to the 384 kbps all inclusive in December 2010...

+1

Exactly the same issue on my 384 uncapped shaped account using p2p in the evenings.

damon_za, what app is that ? I use Networx - and would like to supplement its functions with some pretty graphs !

So people actually pay for 384Kbs uncapped and unshaped instead of just paying for the 4mbps uncapped shaped account.

How...in the world does this make sense? You will get better speeds and latency throughtout if you just go for the 4mbps uncapped/shaped account.

R499 For a 384kbs? Think about what you are paying for here...that is SNAIL speed even if it is unshaped BW it does not come close to matching 4mbps.

Is there some sort of new theory behind using 384kbs? Can people even stream in HD(international) without buffering on that thing? I am lost for words...

VioAdmin you are wright and wrong. For HTTP purposes (streaming and the like) a 4Mbps line would be better (most of the time), but for P2P I have my doubts some times. For instance, my reason for having uncapped is mainly for P2P, not so much for HTTP. I had a 512 shaped uncapped account which became just about useless for P2P, even the 1am to 6am slot became quite miserable, not seeing close to full speed ever, besides for the odd spike. Very frustrating indeed and at most I could only get about 60 to 70 gigs of data in a month, which I paid R300.00 for.

Now with the unshaped 384Kbps I get a constant non-stop stream of data, which is predictable and reliable. I have not had any service outage yet, even when bits of networks etc. got broken and many was left without connections. Although I have not needed to, I can be fairly certain that at least 100gig a month is very doable, at R200.00 extra a month.

Yes it is far slower than a 4Mbps account, but the frustration that would accompany a shaped account for P2P is simply not worth it to me. I like reliability, and availability when I want it, not when the network will allow it. More speed would be great and I long for the day when it might be more affordable, but without reliability speed is pointless, for me. It's like having a Bugatti Veyron, equiped with only a 20 litre fuel tank, pointless.

MFour your contradicting yourself. you just said that you like reliability and availability when you want it, but on 384 (never mind unshaped) you still going to wait some time for it to dl. believe me they can try to make 384 sound so good, but its not broadband. go 4mb and you won't regret it. either 4mb or nothing.

lalalalala oh hi guise... it's me again. I can't play wow with mweb.

Nope, not contradicting myself. For some reason my shaped experience has been far far below that of other users. This would hold true for a 4 meg account as well, seeing that my 512 (as stated) account was virtually useless for NNTP. From many threads it is quite clear that everyone does not have the same experience with shaped accounts, whether it is geographical or some other reason, I don't know.

Of course a 384 account takes longer, but it works 24/7 without ever having to wonder whether it will run at good speed in that 1am to 6am window, or not. My decision was made on my experience of the shaped accounts, and whilst a shaped account might work for you and some others, it definitely was not working for me. The unshaped account is brilliant compared to the shaped account, it simply works.
