Outgoing mail (mail that you SEND) gets sent through the SMTP server. This is specific to your service provider. When overseas, you need to use the SMTP server of the ISP that you use to connect. Or you can use a public SMTP server.

The propblem is I am setting up a mates laptop..

Limited tech knowledge.. but he is a traveler... a different country every month...

and i need to setup a solution that will allows him to use thunderbird anywhere in the world..

Can Anyone recommend a good public smtp.. surely uor mail providor should allow you to use the smtp server from anywhere ... thats whas authentication is for.. or is it the isps clocking port 25?

If your ISP's smtp server supports authentication, then sure, it should work.

Use Gmail ?

MWEB let's you access and send email via the web. It's not necessary to use Gmail.

The point is that he seems to require an offline viewer (Outlook or some such). Hence he needs an SMTP server to send mail.

The reply I got from MWeb was to use

relay.mweb.co.za with authentication...

lets see if this works
