I am a mweb user thats been offline for the past month and a half due to a move. Can someone fill me in on what I've missed? Changed T&C's? People getting banned? How many outages have there been lately? Quality of the service lately in general?

Thanks.

Plenty of outages!

They've provided an SAIX link to numerous
account holders in case it goes down again.

They're getting narked with people who
download too much or who bypass the
shaping.

Shaping was getting steadily worse and
worse, so I can understand why people
try and get past it.

Technical support is a shoestring affair
and they generally pass you off to
Telkom or let the problem grow mould.

MWEB seem overly concerned about their
reputation, but not too concerned in
doing anything active to improve it.

Latency tends to be up and down on
MWEB, so games are hit & miss.

Torrents are out during the day and
relatively slow during the night. I
measured them against a Telkom
account and they were around 1/3rd
to 2/3rds of what they could be. The
lower part being more common.

Rapidshare and other filesharing sites
are lumped together with torrents as
a discouraged activity, with the same
performance.

Browsing is generally good all of the
time. Normal downloads are also fine,
if not completely top speed.

They keep referring people to new
terms & conditions, but they are quite
vague and seem to be a 'cover-all'.

You're forgetting that the last two or three days random disconnects were common.

Video streaming sites like youtube have slowed down.

I can't say that MWEB's support is bad, the MWEB guy on this forum is very good at support. Some of the telephone operators are not very good but I think probably more 2/3s are good enough.

The initial response is good, but the ultimate
resolution is poor in the extreme.

It's one thing to say "Send us your user-name
and we'll look into it". In fact thats quite easy.

The hard part is finding the fault, having it fixed
and then apologising. MWEB is quite bad at that.

Thanks for the detailed update. I'm sure you couldn't wait for someone to ask for an update. You've even highlighted each section with some bold words.

Why are you an MWeb customer?

Well so is your bashing of anyone who says anything negative about the service.

Actually it wasn't all negative comments

I was a customer, and those are my experiences.
I highlighted the sections to make it easier to find.

I'm not sure what you mean by that comment about
not being able to wait. This forum is full of opinion.
Yours is just one.

Thanks sabrewolfy but I did ask for an update, and the bold text is nice, makes it quicker to read, which always makes sense in a long post.

What I didn't ask for is for you to infect yet another thread with useless commentary on other people's posts, and the negative comments you then inevitably draw as a result. How about trying to only post when you actually have something useful to add.

Thanks GingerBeer. Can anyone elaborate on the T&C changes? Is latency worse for gaming than it was two months ago? Same question about shaping.

How do you think this is achieved?

It's remarkably easy to achieve fast browsing.
It's just a shame they have to shape everything
else so much to do it. It shows just how limited
the 'space' is that they've allocated to the number
of subscribers.

They have changed the advertising to remove
the gaming sentence. I think it said "ideal".
The terms changed as well.

Originally the T&C were the same for uncapped
and capped. They've made some minor changes,
but still left it vague so you could read in what you
like.

You can play games on MWEB, sure. Some days the
experience is good, others it's poor. You can't do it
well in the daytime because of the shaping.

Unless you're playing some games that need quick
reactions then don't worry. That leaves out Battlefield,
Call of Duty and Counterstrike.

I'm using an unshaped account and it has been a lot
better.
