Wow, thanks for bringing this to my attention...my line performance has improved two fold:

news servers also depend highly if the content is cached.

Im going to assume, that when you first started downloading, you downloaded popular stuff, and then went on to download stuff that is older or not as highly downloaded.

If a file has not been downloaded recently, it will be MUCH slower than if someone else has downloaded it recently

i don't use the mweb news server, i use astraweb (i don't think LancelotSA does either). so it doesn't matter if it's "cached" or not.

And as a matter of interest what is your total usage for the month?

This is what I am trying to work out. Am I being shaped more stringently because I have gone over a certain amount or what is the story?

And, GforceD, I am not convinced by what you are saying relating to download/upload ratios etc. I understand you can often get cached and uncached stuff but I am not sure about the whole "more popular equal slower" argument.

It's Ok sometime I doubt I even know what I am saying. :) Did you say you with Mweb? I know for certain Axxess (of Evil) and a few others definatly start throttling your bandwidth down after certain number of gigs. Axxess for example call it a rolling threshold and if you download more than xx gigs in 10 days then they slow your speed, but it should only be in the day.

Could anyone using their adsl for non raping, non abusive software theft comment ?
From a normal non p2p'ing users perspective, it still sucks however.
And yes, the math is confusing... 90 :D

My MWEB 4Mbit does not suck. DRM'ed TV shows from EUROPE download at 440KB/sec in the evenings (8pm - 12am) - yes fully legit.

I've noticed an improvement this week. RS is much faster - goes at around 230KB/sec in the evenings, used to max out at 100KB/sec. From about 2am RS starts to go at 400KB/s.

Agreed, my speed patterns are similar. I really am happy this week... apart from my seemingly localized (sporadic) latency issues.

no luck, just upgraded to wallet-raping unshaped uncapped... hopefully now I will be able to get my damn game updates, for which my paid subscription ends in 2 weeks :(
To be fair to mweb, I tested 3 isp's seperately on my line, and only webafrica was performing ok... the rest had the same issues. I also noticed there is a major problem locally, im getting better latencies to game servers in the UK than to cape town (8km away)... hehehe.

That should not be even an issue! If their FUP says 100GB or 200GB and you are below that so what!!!!!!!!!!

People use that because they have nothing else to argue their point with.

errr What FUP? :wtf:

I just signed up for mweb today.I see they have added a heavy download uncapped option.

I see trouble on the horizon and it's going to cost R1,999 to get out of trouble(assuming you have a 4meg line)
The leopard doesn't change its spots it just............

... it just dyes them to blend in to the background.

Pretty much
I think it's pretty safe to assume you wont be doing downloads at Gforce anymore

Was toying with the notion of moving to MWEB but I think it best if I stick it out a while longer
