I know we have a lot of MWeb threads but I didn't want this getting lost in the dark recesses of one of them.

I have been complaining about the slow speeds on my news server downloads the last few days and now I took the following screen shot of the download history.

Clipboard0148.jpg

If we compare Tuesdays (as I know for a fact I had the computer on downloading for 24 hours on both those days - in fact most days but I'd expect weekends to be better because of shaping).

Tuesday 4th May 3110MB
Tuesday 11th May 1667 MB

Quite a large difference there to say the least!! And you can see this pattern repeated on the Monday too.

Out of interest, I have been too lazy to do the maths myself, what does 1667MB in 24 hours work out to be when compared to my line speed of 384k?

Now before someone says it, I know 27Gb in 12 days is still OK for the price.

That should not be even an issue! If their FUP says 100GB or 200GB and you are below that so what!!!!!!!!!!

People use that because they have nothing else to argue their point with.

Lately, I've been very happy with MWEB - 100KB/s ± during the day, opens at night... they better keep it like that, this is service I expect and I'm happy with.

Sheesh okes, you are complaining with gold in your teeth :)
I get 12kb/s MAXIMUM on my 384kbps line, during the day, MUCH less during the night time.
This is to servers http/ftp/anything pretty much in europe, australia and america...

If I switch to my old ISP, shaped WebAfrica, no problem, 38kB/s anytime of the day.

Calls to mweb, they blame telkom, the line, me, virusses, firewalls, anything they can think of. Fact of the matter is, my other ISP accounts, capped shaped, works 100%

Mweb uncapped is horrible, in my opinion, and I would give my left nut to get the rates you are getting :(

Yeah, I have to admit I was roped into this MWeb uncapped by the comments people made and the negativity around Afrihost. Afrihost are at least transparent with their shaping. I would love to be able to do a full 24/7 comparison with constant downloads between the two ISPs.

You think someone on MyBB (perhaps one of the staff writers) could organise some test accounts and do a trial of them. Perhaps have a number of PCs set up. One running 24/7 news server downloads using Afrihost, one doing the same using MWeb. And then another PC running 24/7 torrents using Mweb, and another using Afrihost.

Indeedy.
I dont even care about volume or GB/Day...
All I want is a steady rate, relevant to my line speed, and equal to that which I obtain using my other ISP accounts...
Occasionally, I download content for my projects, or software dev, and then I have to sit and wait for a 5kb/s download.
Ok, and let's not get into detail on latencies.

Of course you do realize that the speeds themselves depend much on (and I take it you using torrents) the number of peers and the upload/download ratio etc and not just mwebs service.

And like you said 27g in 12 days in nothing to cry about and at the end of the month 90 gigs is a lot of movies, a few games and a earful of music

Again, the maths with that 90Gbs.

I am not using torrents but news servers.

Yeah its all about the big picture if you paying Mweb per month you want to know what you downloading a month. If you download 27gig in 12 days awesome but 27g in a month not so awesome.
News servers also are affected by upload/download ratios and also the more popular the file the more load so the slower it'll download.Remeber you not download from Mweb but through them so they only part of the picture when it comes to download speeds.
Of course it can be a very big part esp with protocol shaping and sorts but hay if you can still download then it's all good. :)

Could anyone using their adsl for non raping, non abusive software theft comment ?
From a normal non p2p'ing users perspective, it still sucks however.
And yes, the math is confusing... 90 :D

Huh? p2p is getting the downside of this deal. If your not using p2p and everything you do is "legal" then I assume you are only using FTP/HTTP? and that is full speed 24/7 from my experience.

Nope! suckie suckie over here!!

Just my data for interests sake:
Day:Up:Down:Total
May 04, 2010 335.3 2242.6 2577.9
May 11, 2010 618.6 2165.8 2784.4

And as a matter of interest what is your total usage for the month?

This is what I am trying to work out. Am I being shaped more stringently because I have gone over a certain amount or what is the story?

And, GforceD, I am not convinced by what you are saying relating to download/upload ratios etc. I understand you can often get cached and uncached stuff but I am not sure about the whole "more popular equal slower" argument.

Nope. Their limitations/throttling/shaping are imposed across the board regardless of your individual usage habits. I still believe the only way to get value for money out of this offer is on a 4mb line. R924 including line rental and this month so far I've done 142gb... R6-50 per gig is very good value yes...

Yeah, I hear you but I really don't need to pull that much data. If I only end up doing 60Gb anyway it does not work out very cost effective.

I agree. My 512 line is also slower this week. On average I did 4Gb a day last week. This week the highest was Sunday with 3.1GB. I'm sitting on 40.5gb total for this month. I'm running torrents fulltime.(Only 2 at a time, the rest are queued)
