MWEB + THE WEEKEND = FAIL

where did you get that figure from?

Here, I'll give you some figures:

Cost of dark fiber to Joburg: MINIMUM R80 million (R20 million of that is in kit) (IF you have other partners on the route, solo build, try R240 million)
Cost of maintaining a dark fiber at that length: Anywhere from R150,000 to R200,000 per month
Cost of SAT-3 at wholesale rates as published by Telkom: Approximately R3600 per megabit/second
Cost of IPC Bandwidth (used to connect an ISP into the DSL cloud): Approximately R4000 per megabit/second

So, lets think about providing full redundancy here

For every megabit of total redundancy excluding hardware cost, to have the capacity lying idle, you are introducing an input cost of at least R8,000 per month. Who exactly is going to pay for this?

Note 1: I thought ADSL was "Always on" internet connectivity...
Note 2: We are paying low prices for LARGE capacity on a network (Some downloading in excess of 300GB a month)
Note 3: My solution: Go to bed.

Then f ucking change your upstream provider. How many times has Mweb gone down this month?

Uhm...m8, there are only two providers who CAN provide for mweb in the quantities they need...Neotel and the group in charge of the Sat-3's distribution (give you one guess who they area). Now...if MWEB were to switch their upstream providers back to where they were...prices would go back up to what they were this time last year. I would rather suffer a weekend or two with downtime than pay those exorbitant prices ever again. You see, Neotel's upstream services to the isp's is what has made the internet so much affordable...and I for one, who actually pays my own internet bill and doesnt rely on daddy to do it for me, am happy that the majority of the time I get decent speeds and no cap for a price I can afford (barely...but still afford). If you want to play the blame game...blame telkom...if they would just lower their IPC charges then more redundancy would be available and this wouldnt be such an issue.

That is not my problem. If I want to buy sugar from spar, I go tho spar, if they don't have sugar I will complain. I don't care if the truck carrying the suger drove off a hill, I want sugar... I don't care how mweb should make sure it doesn't happen, they must just do it.
the client is always right...

They can do it, it will just cost the end users like R50K a month!

You have been ANC'ed! ur the type of moron that dont mind to get butt f@#$@ed because youre used to it. Or do u work for MWEB?

EVERY CUSTOMER HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN AND NO EXCUSES IS ACCEPTED TO BE PASSED AS A LEGIT REASON FOR YOU TO PAY FOR NOTHING, if you pay a hooker for not even any service, thats ur problem. MWEB can atleast pick up the phone and say we are aware of the problem we have contacted your usptream provider and is working on the problem. period.

This is why this country is going to hell, customers are treated as trash, and guess what, they are getting away with it... comon u know what i am talking about...

My point of view is, im paying R550 for crap, to have a crap week tired of stress from work, wana play some wow, hon, watch trash on youtube. then i get this, comon, what have i, and you done to deserve this? So we have the right to complain, to enshure that MWEB get on the case of SEACOM!

Am I not clear enough?.. and btw if I you wana complain about some one complaining, your an hyppocrit! STAY OFF FORUMS PLZ

Calm down, the porn will still be there tomorrow.

How on gods green wonderful earth should Mweb not let a network failure on their primary route affect their users?.. must they hire people to run with the network packets now?

Picturing that made me lol.

But what if you specifically want the Spar brand of sugar as it is cheaper and they only have Huletts sugar on the shelf at a higher price? You have a choice but you want the cheaper brand.

Me lolz at the posters getting all red faced and looking like they're going to have a heart attack about the downtime.

Go out and watch a movie - by the time you get back it will all be fixed.

(Hope I don't regret saying that :) )

be happy you can still log in here to complain about it just think if they took that away from you what would you do

Perhaps Rudi from mweb should stop claiming that putting redundancy in place then ?:)

If "they" took it away, then I fear for the future telecoms in this country.

@Moggie, still waiting for you to answer my question.

@ToxicBunny dont worry about it, leave them and let the ignorant users get upset and leave mweb, its more bandwidth for the rest of us.

Well, as a student, I always go the cheapest option. But just because it is cheaper it doesn't mean you can cut corners and leave cockroaches in your sugar packs... you must still deliver a great product. It is your choice to make your product cheaper than the competition. If you can't deliver the great product cheaper, then don't make your prices cheaper.
I realise it is something unpredictable that happened, these things do happen from time to time... I am now just rambling to make up time until the internet is up again...

Big difference between full redundancy and partial redundancy :) You can have SOME redundancy at a reduced cost, that will protect you in SOME situations. Every LEVEL of redundancy costs more money, so you have to balance out what is economically viable vs your risk levels.

The most redundant networks in the world have outages because of simultaneous failures, some less than others because of how much redundancy they have. :)

Then they'll guarantee uptime on THEIR network, not their upstream providers network.. welcome to the wonderfully complex world of the internet.

Its not pedantic or obtuse, its reality.
No, but I seem to have a better understanding of how the internet is put together and how much infrastructure of this nature costs in this country than you do.

Really? I do understand the concept of a single point of failure, providing backup redundancy (if only limited capacity), and I seem to understand a lot more about customer service than either you or Mweb do.

Funny to torrents connecting local peers only...some sick guys out there; yeah, I'm talking about you Mr 47.135.35.XXX.dsl.mweb.co.za!

I downloaded that torrent by accident, but I'll let you leech to get my ratio back.

Carry on...
