MWEB + THE WEEKEND = FAIL

MAN IM LOVING WOW NOW, thank you SEACOM. SORRY MWEB FOR LISTENING TO US YACKIN AND MOANING

ROFL, the mentality on this thread is the best, now everyone is happy again :P

PS good speeds 270kbps on Usenet :P

Classic. Everyone loves mweb again :)

Not really. Slow I can deal with, zero traffic is a different matter. Still no explanation of the failure of redundancy. Another problem with a 'total' outage, is that on several local sites, the pages won't load because of advertising that is hosted internationally.

Been back online for a while, still waiting for the Network Status Notice page to update:
http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/NetworkStatusNotices/tabid/1765/Default.aspx

Edit: 8am on Saturday, been online since 11pm, Mweb status page still says offline. Shame guys...

Edit(2).

Anyone else experiencing heavy shaping on their mweb account? torrents are at 6kb/s

I am getting 210kbps on a 4mb line. This may be minimal shaping or a lack of strong seeds (not many seeds on this particular dl).

For some reason Ive got no Internet access this morning, so I'm posting this from my iPhone(vodacom 3g) ???

Any one having the same problem?

Nope...

portions of mweb's routing tables must still be a bit messed, but the majority of stuff is working just fine for me.

Got it working again, it was a problem with my router lol nothing with mweb, sorry for the false alarm

Note: this is just a guess based on what you are seeing there, there could be a couple of other reasons for this, but that would be a first glance analysis using what I know about BGP and Internet routing

Yup nzb's flying at 350KB/s

Seems like it is going to be a good weekend.

Every time MWeb have a major outage, they seem to end up using a whole lot of new routes for internation peering. Sometimes these end up being a little faster (lower latency), so there is a 'slight' upside to reconfiguring the routing...

Interoute.Net is listed in Wikipedia as the London gateway for SEACOM:

MWeb also recently use a variety of other international peers, such as CogentCo, Above.Net, which seem to get quite congested during the week...

Also can't browse certain sites. it is driving me nuts

Just got an e-mail from MWeb:

Dear MWEB Customer
Over the last few weeks we have experienced partial or complete failures on our international bandwidth, as was the case yesterday when cable damage on the Neotel links between Midrand and the coast resulted in an outage that lasted from about 7:00pm through to midnight. In almost each instance the cause of the failure has been unique, although the resulting disruption to our service is the same. Whilst it is remarkable that these failures have typically been confined to the weekend, this is purely coincidental.

Please be assured that this matter is receiving our most urgent attention. Notwithstanding the fact that we are continuously building and expanding our network, we simply cannot tolerate this degree of instability from our upstream providers and we are considering our options in this regard.

We fully appreciate the frustration that this creates for you, our customers, and would like to thank you for your patience during this time. We remain committed to changing the internet landscape in South Africa.

Kind regards
Derek Hershaw
CEO: MWEB ISP

Just got an e-mail from MWeb:

"Dear MWEB Customer
<snip>"

Very reasonable. They are (obviously) aware of the problems and of the frustrations that these problems cause to their users and they are actively looking at what they can do to prevent such problems from arising in the future. I'm satisfied with those comments.

I think we can rule out the comments mentioned here that it was all a great conspiracy concocted by MWeb to save them some bandwidth :erm:

To continue with the 'sugar' analogy from earlier. If you were to visit your local shop looking for sugar only to discover that he did not have any in stock because the truck did not arrive, you could jump up and down and engage in as much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth as you like, he still would not be able to produce a kilogram of sugar for you. Chances are, the lack of sugar delivery irritates him as much as it does you. He has to deal with irate customers who may go elsewhere and he has to fight with the sugar delivery people.

The same applies to MWeb of course. I'm not sure what it says about us as a community when our response to an outage is pure vitriolic hate towards MWeb. We've discussed this at length of course. We want what we pay (much less than before) for, with 100% redundancy. We won't accept a second of downtime, but we also won't pay thousands of rands per month for 100% redundancy. Yes, I know people on R2000 business packages were also affected. Possibly MWeb could have had a better response for them. I just get frustrated when the initial and recurring reaction from the community is to flame the living hell out of MWeb. It's their fault, they cut us off to save bandwidth, this is all a greater conspiracy, etc. I'm sure they hate outages and always do their best to resolve them.

The only way to avoid dealing with upstream providers is to be your own. Like that other large telecommunications monopoly in this country.
