MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Sites loading slower and slower and less content as the day is progressing.

18 hours of downtime is not the end of the world!

It is when its pay day and you can't even get into a local banking site to pay your staff.

Main problem I had with Mweb yesterday was local sites being too slow or timing out. Not sure what they were doing on their network but AFAIK local should not have been affected by an international outage. Unless their efforts to re-route traffic went totally to pot!

Never had issues with local sites;

Though if you're running a business, you really shouldn't be reliant on a single provider to get to your online banking. Even I as a consumer/employee have two backup internet links for "just in case"

I have a R150 P/M iBurst account, think it's something like 500mb as a route if ADSL is dead, and I have a prepaid SIM with R200 airtime loaded in a 3G dongle, for if the **** really hits the fan. ( This isn't counting my 11GB afrihost bandwidth that I signed up for ages ago that I let my family use - R99 per month is just too good a deal to drop )

So is there any knowledge of when this issue is going to be sorted? Its been 24hours+ already hasn't it?
I can't even http download, the downloads just never start, even hotfile which is always slow, just wont start a download. No amd drivers, nothing. Just browsing working, some sites not.

Grass is not always greener

Everyone complaining here about Mweb and their lack of backup capacity and posting about Afrihost. Here's my Afrihost story for the last 24h.

I play Planetside 2 online on a EU server. With Seacom being down, I switched to my free 1Gb Afrihost account. I used it up yesterday so I went to Afrihost and bought a 5Gb prepaid account. Despite me putting in my new credit card details, their system decided to use my old outdated credit card details and didn't active the account. So once I get notified of this, I put in my new details again. Now the account is marked as active in their client zone, but it still doesn't work (I get an ip address assigned from them but no traffic will flow). So I log a support ticket.

Couple hours later I get a phone call from Afrihost. To cut a long story short, I have a serious router (Mikrotik 2011) and modem and I have a lot of tcpip networking experiance and passed a Mikrotik router exam. I can tell my 5Gb account is not working and the problem is not my side. The Afrihost guy on the phone is so useless that in the end all he can do is tell me to reboot my modem and if that doesn't work, says then they will create me a new account. My mweb works (badly atm), two prepaid webafrica accounts work, free 1Gb afrihost account works (capped now), new 5Gb prepaid Afrihost doesn't work. Time now to email them and get them to create a new 5Gb account for me.

I personally am not going to be switching to Afrihost from my Mweb uncapped. Mweb support is way better.

Not only are Afrihost support useless, but they get rude and sarcastic if you push them. Quite agree stay with Mweb. BTW Gian doesn't care - I emailed my problems to him and HE DIDN'T BOTHER TO RESPOND.

We've had feedback for the engineers that good progress is being made on the restoration and they are confident it will be completed today. We'll update you again if the situation changes.

Perfect, thanks.

And I think everyone should just calm down in this thread and restrict themselves to asking legit questions about the outage and not just ranting, that helps nobody.

Well thanks to Axxess for sponsoring a free 3GB account as my mweb account isn't usable

I am using the following publc DNS servers and they alleviated a lot of the name resolution issues I've been experiencing:

89.233.43.71
89.104.194.142

Input on your PC, not your router.

Agree. It's not my intention to move permanently. MWeb techs have been very good over the years.

However, it is good to know how cheap, easy and quick it is to make temporary switch at times like this.

Speeds are OK now. Youtube steaming is working like normal for me

Those DNS servers are in Denmark. How does using overseas DNS servers help during an International outage? :wtf:
