MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Having similar problems in the Centurion (Lyttleton) area. in fact I couldn't post this replyusing my mweb 1mbps uncapped unshaped so doing this over 3G.

Local looks OK.

Youtube is useless. 10 seconds of video downloaded in 5 minutes at 240p.

International pings are also OK latency-wise but a fair proportion of timeouts.

I tried to run the mweb speedtest before I make a call but it tells me I need to update Java, which is a joke because over the past hour the Oracle page has failed to download. I don't see a full download of Java happening with my connection like this.

No I take it back. Even on local downloads I don't get better than 25k/s. Local sites just load more reliably.

I feel sorry for Mweb Guy. I have the feeling Mweb are cutting corners but he can't openly admit that since a large amount of premium account holders would be fairly pissed off.

My gaming latencies are still good (although there have been a couple of hiccups) but the amount of youtube videos that just freeze or fail to load is getting a bit annoying though. And these weird patches where the web just stops working properly for anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes...

Hi Superhero

Hi Mweb Guy

I've been an Mweb customer with 4Mbps uncapped for over 2 years - I'm on premium.

Since the SEACOM incident a couple of weeks back, streaming anything has become impossible at my house in Bryanston area. I used to be able to stream YouTube, Netflix, Hulu etc flawlessly without more than 1 or two buffers lasting a second or two each.

Now, I can't stream anything at all. I swear, Youtube, no matter what quality, buffers every 10 seconds. I can't watch anything on Hulu or Netflix - it buffers for 10 minutes and then plays for 1 minute. It will take me 24 hours to watch a 1 hour movie. The AppleTV that I bought can just as well go to the dustbin 'cause i can't do anything with it.

When I put my FNB ADSL account details into my router, I don't have any of these issues and I can even stream Hulu in HD.

So I donno what to do. The same happens when I remote desktop into my servers at the office. With M-Web, the connection freezes every every couple of minutes where I can't do anything and then it comes back on again. With FNB or Telkom account is's a breeze.

I've even tried a new ADSL modem with M-Web settings but that also didn't help. Connecting with LAN cable instead of wifi also doesn't make a difference.

I'm not a heavy user - I use around 50 - 70GB per month. What else can I do?

If you having trouble with youtube, please supply me with the following info I will make sure the engineers get it.

1) when did the problem start
2) nature of the problem (slow, just buffers, freezes, etc)
3) youtube stream speed
4) does it happen on another PC/device when tested.
5) account type
6) Region
7) are you able to stream from another similar site and what is the experience like (dailymotion, metacafe, vimeo, veoh, etc)

Also include the time of day these problems occur.

Thanks you in advanced.

1) when did the problem start
Since that one weekend where SEACOM had a failure about 3 weeks ago. Since then it basically stayed the same - i think your engineers forgot to switch back to SEACOM and are still using the backup WACS cable.

2) nature of the problem (slow, just buffers, freezes, etc)
HTTP loading fast, streaming YouTube impossible, even at lowest quality setting, streaming from HULU and Netflix, which has worked flawlessly for the past 6 months, impossible since about 2-3 weeks ago after SEACOM incident.

3) youtube stream speed
Buffers for 2 minutes, plays for 10 seconds, buffers for 10 minutes etc etc. This is at 240p on a 4MB line.

4) does it happen on another PC/device when tested.
The same on all 3 PCs running Win7 and Win8 - all are i7s, also the same on my brand new mac.

5) account type
Premium 4MB uncapped

6) Region
Bryanston, Sandton, JHB

7) are you able to stream from another similar site and what is the experience like (dailymotion, metacafe, vimeo, veoh, etc)
Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, iTunes store (I have my AppleTV set to standard defenition (lowest setting) so everything is streaming at 480p, which I don't think is a high setting for 4MB uncapped).

NB NB NB NB: All of the above issues disappear when I use the same line, same modem, same PC but with an FNB ADSL login or Telkom Uncapped 4MB login. So the only common dinominator here is the Mweb account - all hardware and software working fine without mweb. All hardware and software worked fine with Mweb for 2 years, until 2-3 weeks ago Seacom incident.

Good to hear I don't seem to be the only one getting royally crap speeds right now.

I can't seem to get more than 1 meg on my 4 meg line. YouTube and pretty much every other site takes forever to load. Mweb guy do you have any idea what's going on here? I am conducting these speed tests at almost midnight and still not going over 1 meg on speed tests.

Update : Yup it's definitely an Mweb problem. Just treated the line with my Afrihost backup account and it's running flawlessly. Mweb I have used you for years... Don't really wanna change, what's going on?

Anyone else having no joy out of their mweb accounts this morning?

Can't get to speedtest
Can't download mail
Can't get to telkom website
Can't log in to D3
Can't watch Youtube

And once again when I switch to an Axxess prepaid account everything is fine.

I've already tried resetting my router and left it off for 20 minutes. (Have a 19 month old, been up since 4)

Just did a speed test and the account seems alright now. New thinks something is wonky with Mweb.

Hi Arzy

I have refreshed your MWEB account. Did you perhaps do a tracert & ping test at the time as this will help us pin point the root cause of the connectivity issue.

The Axxess prepaid account is it the same as the MWEB account?

Hi Guy!

I did not do a tracert and ping this morning. Just got back home now though and tried everything again and there seems to be an improvement.

I could at least log into D3 again on my MWEB account, first time in weeks.

Axxess account is just one of there normal prepaid unshaped account.

Why do MWEB accounts degrade over time though and isn't there a way we can refresh/reauth them ourselves when required?

Getting some really slow web browsing speeds this morning. Tracert looks fine though and there's no high latency. Watching youtube videos is near impossible. Mweb Guy, any ideas?

EDIT: Just ran some speed tests and I'm getting 0.3mbps on my 4meg line. I've tried rebooting the router as well.

Hi Arzy

Our accounts don't degrade over time, there are various outside factors that could influence things differently.

There isn't an option for you to refresh/reauth the account, we can only do it from our side.

Hi Solja.

Where did you do the speedtest? I suggest doing it on our server, please ensure that nothing is running in the background. Close all applications etc, then do the speedtest.

I did the speed test on mweb's server and mybroadband's. Still getting very slow speeds. Youtube is still unwatchable.

Please can you send me the results on the speedtest via PM. Also, let me know what else is slow on your side.

Hi Mwebguy

I am getting the same as Solja. My youtube is incredibly slow, international browsing is really slow. www.speedtest.net can't complete a speedtest without hanging and the mweb speedtest shows a download speed of 0.5mb/s (4mb/s line syncing at 3mb/s).

Will send you the mweb speedtest results via PM as well

I received your PM and responded.

It seems like Skype is working again! Been signed in the whole day so far!

used mweb (384kbps & 1mb) for more than two years. cancelled for the end of february 2013. signed up with openweb gold.

most of my downloads used to bomb out on 99%. although i'm only using openweb for two days and dont like the company, all my downloads complete without any problem and none of my files are corrupt as lately all my downloads with mweb had been.

my average download speed on mweb had been around 100 - 104kbps, on openweb its around 95 - 100kbps but its rock solid and steady.

i dont want to blow openweb's wistle to much, but it seem that you do get what you pay for.

i might even consider to stay with openweb.
