MXit beats Facebook and Google

haha....I HATE mxit ... even their iPhone version is a piece of crap compared to any other similar service application. I guess they only thing that really makes them "cool" is the fact that they support such a huge amount of mobile devices. But smartphones are taking over and they'd better improve their service to cater for higher bandwidth users if they want to keep up.

Mxit is a spin-off that rose from the ashes of a telecoms industry in a country with -some- technical potential but seriously outdated infrastructure and pricing...
Therefore, I think they did a good job, but Mxit is just so incredibly outdated that I cannot realistically see them as the "best"... Maybe the "best" when you take cross platforms, low data rates, and low bandwidth rates into consideration.

It does have a very good mobile phone user interface going for it.

pity its pc client really sucks

well..I dont use mxit, used it it and to say the least didnt find it entertaining.....
BUT..remember..I'm not 16...or a teen...so not falling into their target market I'm not suprised by the fact that I'm not impressed
And yes mxit is low tech, gosh really just jabber in its most simple form, but here are my reasons why mxit will stay on top of the SA market for quite a while still

A) its accessible, every tom dick and harry can access it only requirement being j2me and airtime
b) keeping it as simple as and basic as it is; means that your airtime use is minimial, and I sometimes wonder in which country half of you live, but this isnt europe, 70 percent of our population can barely afford to buy their teen R15's airtime so to them this is the main factor
c)distributed, lets say you are teen X12 and your friends X14,X15 and x16 are already using mxit then why you whould'nt want to join them? Chances are "Service z" which is new doesnt have them on yet, or half of their phones doesnt support most of the "awesome" features in anycase. (same reason most people use their preffered IM program, not because of the services but because of your contacts)

You can say what you want, and you can despise Mxit but you have to salute them with their ingenuis bussiness plan, the okes knew their target market

coolest?...

Oh hell...

-100000000 to the intelligent of SA's youth then..
Mxit is a plague that should be excised from this planet.

That CR4P should really be banned!!!!

Then so should every other IM service, every chatroom, IRC etc.... what mxit offers is a mean of communication. What I love about mxit is the fact that they solidly proved exactly just how the networks are smoking us with the price of sms's.
mxit proved capable of keeping their end users content apparently, unfortunately what mxit cant give you is decent people to communicate with over the system.
I still prefered running "windows Live messenger" on my phone, but I do so for the same reason teens use msn, because all my contacts use a similiar service. Not because its a better service, couldnt care less in the end all you really want is to get the message to the other side as fast and efficiently as possible at the lowest cost. thus making mxit a platform for the cellphone obsessed youth.
also when compared to their main rival in the mobile IM platform, mig33: mxit still is the superior IM, being way more efficient. The platform way less "hangy" and the application itself way more responsive. in the end mxit never attempted to be "everything", what they promise you is basic IM capabilities, everything else is an extra

The news24 site has a different opinion...

I guess Mxit is easily accessible to the youth compared to the others...

Ja, but remember that 2 million South Africans also thought that Dr. Bones was a cool movie.

We're not exactly talking about the creme d'elite of public taste here.
