Mxit gives robbers away

Two robbers were arrested after the number of a cellphone they allegedly stole was spotted by its owner on the social networking site Mxit, The Herald Online reported on Monday.

I just the girls
who had the stolen phone's boyfriend wakes up.

Cos the fact that she went to meet a guy who was chatting her up means that she might be looking for a "stukkie" on the side. A friend of mine bought his chick a phone and put mxit on for her and she ended up going out on a date with another guy.

They stole the phone and kept the same sim in it?

And it was not black listed either.

If you have a RICA'd sim and you fail to do that they'll just lock you up if someone uses your stolen phone and sim for a crime.

It doesn't mention using the same sim. The login info for the Mxit account is stored on the phone, Mxit isn't linked to the sim.

Although if the police were competent they wouldn't need to lure the robber into the meeting. They could get the IP address from Mxit and track them.

I then invited myself on that number and chatted to the girl...
so is the number linked to the mixit account?

You register by your phone number, so in a way. But there is nothing stopping you from logging on to a different number to what your phone uses as long as you have the password.
The stolen phone probably had "remember password" turned on in Mxit.

I still login to the account linked to my SA number even though I'm in New Zealand now. Moving to a new number is a pain. Just have to pray nobody in SA gets that number and then gets my password by sending an SMS to the password recovery number.
I'll change it sometime, or stop using Mxit.

IMO it was a stupid decision of the Mxit team to use the phone number as a login.

Agree. I believe you first have to ask the person's Mxit (phone) number before you can start to recognise the number, which rarely happens, unless you both interested in the same chat room.

That is only the case if a person has set their number to private, which seems to be a minority (at least on my contacts list).

I just have to lol at this.

Her boyfriend gave her a new phone. What a good guy! And, what's more, it came with Mxit installed and, no less, that Mxit already had contacts on it! She must have thought she hit the jackpot or something!

lol:D
