They should have taken cues from WhatsApp when it started. Adapted their app. Made it easier to use. My gosh, the last time I looked at that app it was very very busy asthetically. They should have followed the same authenticaion with your phonebook and simply add them if your contacts also has Mxit. I know it sounds like a copy and paste what I am suggesting, but look who won. WhatsApp and Mxit died. Results speak for them selves as to what customers wanted.

Ahhhhh.... TBH I used mxit about 10 or so years ago... never loaded it again afterwards.
 
I feel a bit for them. Maybe Whatsapp hit the sweet spot with simplicity and usefulness.

I still remember in 2011 at the mobile operator I was, we had to do special routing for Mxit traffic, because the bulk of the internet traffic was theirs.
In this quickly developing tech world, you go from hero to zero in a short space.
 
Ag the dude that started it cashed out a long time ago. He did well for himself. It's the people who bought out who made the balls up. Wasn't a knot Craig involved?
 
What nonsense coming from the MXit camp (as expected), they had years in which to build a quality smartphone version of the platform but they actively chose to (as most South African companies do) cheap out on quality and sit on their hands and be complacent, thinking that they could just continue doing what they were doing and they would be okay.

I remember years ago when the iPhone came out, users were *begging* MXit to create a version of the platform that (a) wasn't clunky as hell and (b) was for their devices, and yet MXit took something like TWO YEARS to create an iPhone version and even then it was utter garbage.

It comes at zero shock that when better, faster, and more native applications (something that many users were begging them to address for years) started appearing for the phones, that they started losing users. As usual however, typical South African corporate arrogance, laziness and complacency ultimately killed them off. No-one caused their downfall but themselves.
 
Surprised they lasted this long really.

The tech game isn't easy: adapt or die.
 
In my first year at university mxit launched... most of us downloaded it and used it for a while.
During the first couple of months the servers were extremely slow, taking hours for messages to get through... It was fun.
We even asked if we could visit their offices. A couple of guys, I think 5, doing all the work with a couple of small servers in the one corner.

But yes, they didn't keep up with the times. They could have been whatsapp i things panned out differently
