Hello all

So looking at a nice SUV for around R90k-R120k

So far looking at a +-2010 Honda CRV with all the bells and whistles

Seen some nice Freelanders as well

Looking for diesel with mileage below 150k

What would you recommend ?

And what are service costs, clutch brakes the usual like ?

Also consider the RAV4 (Gen 3) & the Mitsubishi Outlander (Gen 2). Solid reliable SUV's.

Personally I think the best choice is a Gen 3. CR-V, to be specific the N/A 2L with the auto.It may ever so slightly be out of budget though.

Another value option is the Hyundai Santa Fe (Gen 2). It's bigger than the all the listed rivals. Same applies to sister car Kia Sorento, late Gen 1.

i dont know generations :) ...give me year models

Santa fe looks good ...

Rav4 is a toyota :)

I would love to stick to the common brands ...but im also worried about service costs and bla bla

I need to test drive a CRV just to see how it goes

Insurance is a killer for me though as well ...so need to properly do some research around it

You mentioned diesel in the original post. Are you open to a petroleum engine?

Preference for stick shift or automatic? This will make a great difference during the selection process. Your selection pool is much more limited if you are looking at Auto with that budget.

Why is insurance a killer btw?

Insurance for the CRV was quoted at R1k fully covered

I am open to petrol but trying to try diesel

Im worried about an auto box so want to stick to manual. How good are the autos though

Ouch. I'm paying under a grand for a 2017 cx-5.

There's a reason why the CRV is the best selling SUV in the world....

Wait, wot? o_O

CRV is a good option, Santa Fe is good. The Outlander has the CVT gearbox which worries me. Not sure how reliable they are in the Outlander, but overall CVT does not have a good rep. RAV4 is a good option as well.

Expect to pay top dollar for Toyota and Honda, you would probably get the best deal on the Hyundai. But you have to shop around.

If you looking for a diesel, it would be stupid to go manual.

If you know what is good for you you'll stay very far away from Honda. The parts are ridiculously expensive you'd swear it isn't a Japanese car, and you won't go picking them up from any spares shop.

Don't consider a free lander. Been there, done that. It will ruin you financially, specially what you will get at your budget.

Tell me more, a friend just bought a mint condition Freelander 2.
Google "known issues on a freelander"

In a nutshell the car fell apart after 180 000km (it was well maintained up to that point).
Rear Diff, Turbo, power steering pump, window mechanisms, electronics to name a few. A Land Rover is not a car one should consider to own out of motorplan.

Will do, thanks.

Wait, wot? o_O

2010 Honda CRV 2.4 vtec exec

Most of the other options dont come fully specced

The CRV comes with sunroof and everything
