Hello!
Look all the IS "testing" using visual route and free ping was during office hours.
SAIX was mostly tested during early evenings. But during office hours you still do get over 100ms pings on IS to sites like www.saix.net and www.telkomsa.net.
Telkom hosts the mail, so the mail downloads much faster on an saix login that it does on an IS login.
I still think SAIX has faster local access to SAIX based things like SGS and SGS over IS lags at places, or put differently SAIX is the better gaming experience, but it costs more.

I know telkom are very fickel, but don't you think its possible that they are hard capping instead of upgrading the IS <-> SAIX peering link?

daysleeper...saix may host your mail but you can move that aswell.. MWEB also has gaming servers and they are lower pings from the IS network than from SAIX so all depends on what you use I suppose....I do see the SAIX gaming server becoming less popular as people start using IS account. I guess my point is SAIX has nothing that cant be moved to IS.
SAIX have know for quite a few months (at least) that they would be hard capping, so I'm sure that influenced their decision to not upgrade the peering link.

So the link is going to remain saturated, and IS is going to blame SAIX on behalf of its customers and vice versa?
And the Internet in South africa is going to remain a mess forever?
I bet that all these new ADSL people are going to use TelkomISP because have you seen the ASDL marketing campaign, it gives customers the impression that the TelkomISP is a piggy back service at an extra cost, so all these new people will go with telkom because of the added luxury of one bill for all the services.
So telkomISP will expand, DSL subscribers will expand, telkom's profits will expand, and so forth.
I think it is a dam cheek to expect IS to foot the upgrade bill if most of the people using the link are TelkomISP's customers accessing IS content because it is cheaper to host on IS (else RPM would be elsewhere) right?

AFAIK myadsl (RPM) is hosted with Herzner and they are with UUNET

Firstly...all the major teir 1 provides in ZA have good peering..either privately or through the ISPA...so the only problem here is SAIX....they have never liked peering with anyone, and this may come back to bite them in the arse...
Secondly...IS is currently involved in legal action that if successfull will force SAIX to upgrade the peering link. They can do this as there are a set of "best practices" regarding peering in ZA, and according to these SAIX should HAVE to upgrade.
I disagree about the SAIX ADSL customer base growing, infact I expect it to shrink dramatically after 1 Nov as there is very very little to attract anyone to buy a SAIX account anymore...it is no coincidence that IS is offering 30gigs local, they want those clients....

If you follow that route you will see it end up in the UUNET data centre in Rondebosch, Cape Town
Look it takes no genius to know the following:
1.) Saying the word SAIX is the same as saying the word Telkom, altho Telkom would like everyone to think its 2 seperate entities.
2.) Come November, there is absolutely no reason to stay on anything SAIX based ie. local gaming, international access, hosting etc.
3.) IS and UUNET peering is excellent, giving IS ADSL Accounts another plus. SAIX peering with either IS or UUNET is terrible, thats the problem, not the other way around.
4.) SAIX access will cost you an arm and a leg, Telkom aka SAIX is hardcapping not to improve the network, but to improve their bank balance.
5.) Getting users onto IS backbone, will effectively give IS more reason to do whatever upgrades they need, on their own backbone. No Provider will increase overall network infrastructures if they dont see growth potential.
6.) IS, MWEB, UUNET etc. etc. can all increase gaming servers, I know of a couple of people allready contacting these 3 entities, to increase sponsored gaming servers, making it yet another strong reason to jump **** and send SAIX to hell.
7.) IS actually listened alot to resellers by pricing the different 2/3/5/7/10 gig packages, they didnt just go 2gig = Rx and we will not listen to any input. They will also introduce more packages from January last I heard, they listen to partial reason atleast. (Sure we all want/need/demand more for our Rand but atm with the IS pricing, its the best available)
8.) Do I need more reasons? Really.. its pretty straight forward to decide from this list.

I use an IS based ISP and yes I am happy so far. Even my P2P stuff (bittorrent) works great and the IS Ftp servers carries the Linux distributions I need to download from time to time ..

Clipse if your assumptions were right and say even 50% of the ADSL base read these forums and were interested in getting the best ADSL deal possible then surely the likes of Axxess, WebAfrica, SAOL etc. would own the ADSL market by now ... i.e. 3Gig vs 30Gig at the same or better price.
To my knowledge the 30Gig ISP's market share is a drop in the ocean compared to the biggies ... e.g. TelkomInternet & MWeb.
