Ok. I'm thinking of getting ADSL, coz 56k is so 1990's. Oh, and keep in mind I really dont know much about ADSL.

Firstly, help me check if I've got everything covered.

I will ofcourse get the cheapest line, 192kbs.

Next is the ISP. Now I need the cheapest possible. really. What can you recommend? 3GB international cap is fine, since I'll be surfing mostly.
I can get a 3gb account for R100 at www.cybersmart.co.za and freeze that price for 24 months. sounds good to me. any advice? is cybersmart and ok ISP?

Then I also have to pay R404 for the installation cost. I see [in a telkom pamphlet] that you get a free 4-port Ethernet Modem.

What else am i missing? I will be converting my current telephone line to an ADSL one.

any help/advide/reccomendations will be appreciated

Hey Karpix, and welcome to MyADSL.

There are so many ISP's out there to choose from. Cybersmart is ok if you dont mind sharing an already shared ADSL line. They buy a normal ADSL from Telkom, and share THAT ADSL with four more people! So when it comes to speed, I'm not too sure..... You also have to choose your ISP based on what you want to do on the net. Eg. International gaming will probably require a SAIX account, as their international service is provided by an undersea fibre optic cable, where as IS (Internet Solutions) get their access via Satellite, which has higher latencies.

BUT...from Nov 1, SAIX accounts will be hardcapped, meaning that after you reach your cap, you can no longer do anything! Your account will be cut off until the next month, or until you buy another account. Cybersmart uses SAIX.

IS on the other hand provide you with 30GB Local access after you reach your cap. (Well 30GB minus the normal account cap you buy eg. 3G)

Combined with a proxy solution such as my OpenWeb's OpenBrowse package (http://www.openweb.co.za/newsite/adsl.html), you can still surf international sites after you reach your cap.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT take Telkom up on their FREE modem offer! This will require you to sign a 24 month contract, and with the ever changeing broadband climate in South Africa, that is NOT something you want to do!

Rather buy your router/modem. They start at about R450 excl VAT!

I hope this helps. Shout if you have anymore questions!

Kind regards,
MrBEEP

thanks alot MrBEEP. i will mostly be surfing. Does this mean that IS will be better for me? I still want to be able to surf, atleast locally, after my cap is reached. i really have no idea witch ISP to choose :-/

Hey karpix,

I have sent you a PM. :)

Imagine's 3gb (30gb local) accounts are cheaper if you dont think you'll be going ovevr you cap too often...

Mr Beep are you saying you wont be multiplexing your bandwidth at all?? At those prices I assumed you had to be???
One last thing...Mr Beep...are you VAT registered caus I will be buying thru a company ?

We will have to multiplex to a degree, but we are not using adsl technology to do this. ADSL will only be used as backup. We have diginet solutions that will be OpenBrowse's main infrastructure.

With the rush to get everything up, we only got around to that last week. Hopefully we will be in a short while. Depending on how long the process takes.

Diginet pricing is R1800 for the first 64k ex bandwidth...int 64k bandwidth will cost another lets say 1500 (thats if you buy quite a bit) and thats for already multiplexexd satellite access. Still dont se how you will be able to get away with it and keep you ratios much lower than adsl ratios??

we are in partnership with another company.... thats unfortunately as much as I can say :(

another Q: is it possible to get an ADSL line from telkom without signing a 24 month contract?

SAIX vs IS

With the end of this month in a couple of weeks, is everybody considering moving to IS?

The reason I ask is that of the two, SAIX is better, even though it is more expensive.

The ping times are much more stable on my SAIX account like 16-20ms, where as on my IS account they are like 75-110ms.

SAIX also seems more reliable to me.

So inspite of the hard cap vs the 30gb, do you still think alot of people are going over to IS?

I surely will be using IS, coz of my tight budget. i wont be doing online gaming, just surfing and downloading. IS would be the better choice, in my opinion, for someone who will mostly be surfing and downloading with little to no online gaming.
If I where planning on playing games online, I propably wouldve gone for a SAIX account.

thats just my opinion, though

I have a few questions here, how do u get 76-110ms?

I have been on an IS account this whole week and whenever I tested latency it was 40-50ms to karoo.mweb.co.za and about 40ms flat to kalahari.mweb.co.za. from IS to saix.net and saix servers in the bit of css I still play, I got 40-50ms aswell.

also never seen pings of anywhere near 75ms to local stuff (expcept during the day and then going from is to saix across the peering link - this will hopefully rectify itself after 1 Nov cause of the hard cap). I would have to say that because IS has WAY more local content on their network they are far better on the local side....

Yip. IS' ADSL is better AND cheaper than SAIX. No contest

My experience with IS local (during business hours) is pretty good ... only SAIX is a bit dodge due to peering issues.

Except for their international throughput ... my experience is that it is 3x slower then SAIX's over the last week (100-120 vs. 300-350 Kbps). Hope IS sorts it out soon.

I assume that's on a 512k account? That's weird. Our experience with IS' international has been pretty good. Even their uncapped sustains a minimum constant speed of 320k (and believe me, some of our clients PUNISH it :) ).

Either way, can't say the difference in speeds would deter me - you'll just hit your cap faster on SAIX and get disconnected :(
