My car got keyed :(

So I went to get a quote from AutoMagic in Centurion. R18k

Have yet to tell my insurance about the damage. Do I do so as soon as possible?

There's a good place in Centurion, DentDoctor.

Also yes, tell your insurance, ASAP.

That should have been the first thing you did. I would do it immediately if I was you.

My insurance allows me 30 days to lodge a claim but better to do it sooner or later. They'll probably want to send out an assessor to see the damage.

Eish that sucks man! Depends how deep it is, if they're surface scratches you may be able to get them polished out. If not, you'd need to contact a panelbeater I think.

I once knocked the gate at home and had light scratches and paint marks (but on the bumper). I used a car wash/wax liquid mixed with a cup of warm water (about 2 spoons car wax to 1 cup hot water) and used a tennis ball to work off the paint.

So if the scratch is not deep, you could try this.

I got most of the paint out, and the light scratch marks are not visible.

Thing with hitting gates/poles/other cars is that there's paint to protect the paint of your car. Your car's paint is coated with a hard clear coat that cures much harder than conventional paints you buy from Builders, so the gate's paint can generally just be polished off. Keying takes off that clear coat, meaning it needs to be put back to avoid chipping, rusting and pitting.

Thanks for the info... Learnt something new :)

Have submitted to Santam. Yeah, this scratch definitely can't just be buffed out - it's pretty deep

could have been a runaway trolley? but that doesnt explain the back getting scratched...did something not happen on your way to where ever you parked? people dont just key a car for no reason - something must have happened...you pissed off somebody, think carefully, did anyone hoot at you, swerve at you, pull signs at you, flash lights at you?

Kk one man.. that's just what it is.
Get it fixed or have a car over 5 years old and do a 95% ghetto fix for 0.1% of that.
What is a ghetto fix?

Don't think i want to ghetto fix mine :)
My car is 6.5 years old and people still think it's new, they're shocked when I tell them the age.

Probably use the touch up paint, then polish until it "kind of blends in" :D

So I got a new car with swirl marks.. then the dealer made it worse - I gave up on trying to keep the car perfect early on.
10 years later I don't regret it - makes it less of a hassle when uninsured grannies drive into it.

^ Agreed, you get to a certain point where it's just not worth keeping the car in perfect shape. So small things I don't bother with, larger issues or ones that would cause rust I will deal with properly.

Big scratch down the length of my car  so I think I'd call this a bigger issue.

Small nicks and what not I don't really mind

So after submitting my claim to Santam, they asked me to go for an assessment at precision repair centre in Centurion. Took about 5 mins and will hear what they say

Might not have been keyed .
Might have been a donkey/ horse cart driving past your car .

I had that happen to me yesterday .
