So either i didnt see it being skimmed somewhere by a waiter or whatever or someone stole my information from one of my online purchases.

Received 8 OTP's last night at 8pm which i didnt see. At 11pm i got an email from Nedbank saying they detected fraudulent activity on my card and put the card on "hold".

This morning i see it all and also that money is gone from my account. Phoned them and they cancel the card and will open a case.

How fantastic :mad::mad:

Happened to me last Thursday evening. It was a FNB cheque card, with Verified by VISA activated. Someone bought something on easypay.co.za Interesting that no OTP came through. Luckily, it was only 'reserved', so I cancelled my card the morning and lodged a fraud claim. Sorted in 2-3 days.

I suspect that there is malware again running on people's POS machines as this is the only plausible explanation that I could find.

Happened to me last week as well!
Standard bank credit card - I don't use the card (only for emergencies) and I recieved a sms notification Wednesday evening that for R500 from Vodacom called bank immediately to stop it and cancel the card, called fraud department in the morning and they picked up they tried to by tires or something for R9000 luckily my credit limit is below that so got rejected.

Problem is Vodacom had debit order so it tried again and went through without an SMS notification (I assumed if card is cancelled it won't) so i have to wait for bank to reverse this.

I Agree it might be card skimming i only used the card at 2 restaurants last month

I'm leaning more toward someone inside the banks doing it, or dodgy card readers being used in retail stores. I went through the same thing a few weeks ago - 'card' was used multiple times to withdraw from ATMs and make online purchases and there's no way they could have got my pin # from malware / online activity.

Got my money back without any hassles from FNB.

That sucks. It's why I try to buy most things with cash. You never know these days.

Happened to me on Monday night. Lying in bed reading got a sms notification of a payment of R1590 through PayPal (but not my account) Immediately called the Fnb fraud line, talking to the lady there and another notification comes through for a similar amount. She cancelled the card immediately.

Had two SBSA cards skimmed over the last 3 months with purchases then done at Kalahari. In both cases it was my cheque card which I only use at tills and never let out of sight. Still unsure how the CVV was taken. I have now koki'd out the CVV.

It's malware running on the card machines. Can be used to compromise even chip and pin cards.

I honestly wish the banks can come up with a solution to this &^#$ once and for all.

I've already cancelled mobile banking on all accounts and hardly ever use my cards now except for when drawing cash once a week in the bank [not that this is any safer in my opinion]. Almost 98% of my payments are now being made in cash.

Verified by Visa is a piece of sht....same goes for the Mastercard equivalent. It provides *zero* benefit for the user and quite a bit of hassle. The crooks (being very cunning) just pick a website that is not Verified by Visa enabled. Imagine that.

That sucks. It's why I try to buy most things with cash. You never know these days.
Its such a f'in hassle though & the banks provide strong incentives to use cards. Plus I kinda like my dirt cheap overdraft. :D

Already scratched the CVV code off mine...considering getting a 2nd card and killing the magnetic strip on the one. As Noxi says though...won't save you if the POS is infected.

grrr...sometimes it feels like half this country is engaged in fraud, corruption and/or theft.

Don't let your card out of your sight!
They have these miniature card readers that they use to steal your card information.

Nice idea. What happens when you need to use an ATM?

You don't, unless the ATM is a chip reader. In an emergency you can pull off the sticker but then you would need to replace it.
