When connected to the internet using 3G HSDPA/GPRS i'm unable to access "My Computer" (C drive etc), however i can still use the internet and any other program just not opening "My Computer" whether it's through the desktop icon or through Windows Explorer, it's just not responding.

I'm using a dell D630 and the problem is not only with the embedded adapter but also when using external usb modems which works perfectly on another D630. When connected to the internet via Wifi or LAN then it's working without a problem.

I've updated the Dell Mobile Broadband Utility as well as the VMC software to the latest already. Even establishing a connection without the connection software, when using a standard dailup, it does the same thing. I've run a virus spyware scan several times in safe mode and don't detect anything.

I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP3. Dell advise that it sound like a windows problem and recommend to reload it. I haven't done it as yet because this will be my last option.

Do you have any idea what's happening?

Try disabling the device's drive letter.

Does it do the same thing in safe mode? Has this ever worked on this machine?

Unfortunately it does sound like you are going to have to reinstall...

i'll try the safe mode option to see what's happening. It use to work without a problem.

I hope it doesn't come down to reinstalling windows:(

I heard of such problems as at my work they are currently experiencing problems with the Dell D630 and and 3G cards.

Heard they still trying to figure out what the exact problem is.

So what was the last thing you changed before it stopped working?

When i received the laptop, there was a problem with the embedded card, so dell replace the embedded card. That's the only hardware change.

I can't really say when the problem started, which make it a bit difficult to determine whether it might be a driver or software conflict issue, which i personally think it is!

Guys thanx so much for the input thus far, but if you have any other ideas please feel free to share.

@ Monkey

When you say that the modem works fine in another D630, that threw a red flag. How much newer is the other Dell?

Reason I ask is that I have a D820 which I received 6 months after my colleagues first got theirs. They were unable to run certain apps correctly (media player, some VMC versions) yet they ran fine on mine.

Turns out the OS differed slightly in build and patch level.
A re-install sorted out all the issues.

I know thats not the option you're considering but chances are it will work.

Before you re-install, swap the harddisks around from one Dell to the other and see whether the problem transfers. If it does transfer to the 'working' Dell then it is a OS problem. :)
