Lately, like over the last 3-4 weeks or so my Cell C USB modem has been giving me alot of hassles.

Sometimes my computer doesnt recognise it and I haveto unplug it and plug it back in numerous times, and when it does get picked up by the computer it most times wont connect due to "hardware failure".

Now granted there are times that it does connect. It doesnt give me the most reliable/stable connection but hey...

The point is I dont fully understand why a product that I paid R1400 for behaves so erratically and why I haveto stress myself out each time I want to connect.

I get this sometimes when using a phone as a modem. It's very frustrating. I try all sorts of tricks, like leaving the phone off until it is connected - picks it up better. Is there maybe a software update for the modem?

Did anything in particular change on your system recently - new software maybe?

@Skeptik: I get that too. I'm pretty sure that it's the USB link thats the problem. The USB link freezes (on the phone side). You would not by any chance be using a SE phone?

@Dekana: Try plugging it into a different USB port after it bailed. The PC should re-recognize it then.

I think it was more or less the same problem i had on my friend's computer after i've installed his N70 on usb cable. So i asked him to buy a USB 2.0 card (PCI) so that we can move away from the Intel MBoard's usb ports, and see if the problem still exists. Up to now it's still OK and connects without any problems.

We are all using USB modems to eliminate problems we might have. The Cell C guy promised new modems but did not deliver. They still sell the same stuff which everyone hates. I bet you he/she does not use the CellC modem. The battery needs to be fully charged before you can use it and if the battery starts going, you will have continuous disconnects. I bet you the battery has 500 or less effective charge cycles. Use a modem without a battery then you will get proper stable connections.

Why does their cheapo EDGE modem have a battery anyway when the other HSDPA modems don't?

bad design! that's not the problem.... why does cell C stick with it if they know it's crap.

They're probably selling it with a huge markup.

Nice Signature!

If you want a modem that works consider the Advinne EDGE or HSDPA USB modems - http://www.3g.co.za/
