My data projector's lamp broke.

In my classroom I have a HITACHI CP-RS55 data projector with the lamp model DT00701.

Like the title says in broke. Granted I've been using it for the last year and a half almost everyday for almost the whole day. I did always follow proper shut down and cool down procedures.

Anyway, do anyone of you know where I can find replacement lamp for this model without paying almost the same as for a whole new data projector?

I already have a price quote from the place we bought it from but for the price they quote I could just add a little bit more and buy a brand new projector.

How difficult is it to install a data projector's lamp yourself?

I can get a new lamp in it's housing for R2100 at a place in Midrand (that has plenty in stock) - opposed to R3150 at a place in Cape Town (that has only one).

Funny thing is the place in Cape Town will give me a 6 month/1000hours warranty on the thing.

The place in Midrand will give me 3 months/400 hours warranty on the lamp if I install it myself (which is easy - 3 screws) but if it breaks upon installation and if it's an electronic fault coming from the projector the warranty won't cover it.

No you may wonder why there would be something wrong with the rest of the projector when just the lamp failed. The problem is I don't frikkin know for sure if it is the lamp that is broken.

When it became defective it gave a loud popping sound exactly as defined in the manual and elsewhere. But after I opened the projector and took out the lamp I can't find an malfunction. Nothing. So what the hell could the problem be.

I'm just an averagely trained PC techie so I don't fancy taking the rest of the projector apart to see if I can spot a problem. And I also don't have the tools to check for any specific electronic problem.

The lady at the midrand place also told me that if I don't fancy troubleshooting the projector I should send it to an audio-visual service agency to first check what the problem is. But the problem is that is easier said than done. I don't live down the road from such a service agency.

I think the above if I posted the complete picture (which I hope i did) is an example of a classical dilemma.

Just make sure not to get fingerprints on the new lamp, sure way to "kill" them quick!

When you install the new lamp, make sure not to get any grease (fingerprints etc) on the glass lens, as this causes "hotspots" and shortens the lamps life, also make sure that while you have the unit open you clean ALL air filters.

I was never a fan of working with projectors, they made me nervous. I once had a Panasonic projector's bulb give up on me, and it made a horrible popping noise when it went. Took forever to get fixed and cost the earth too.

I think the newer model projectors' lamps are much easier to replace, but it's still not something I'd want to fiddle with. I work on most pc things, but for that I'd leave it to the experts.

Why am I reading this old thread?

It showed at the top of the list as a new unread thread...

Weird...
