The above mod is really easy to do. I'll just add some padding tape in the grinded area with insulation tape on top of it.

What i like about you Ponder is your vast knowledge of things you may not even own.

I can source these PATA drives anywhere, but my whole quibble is the crazy price of these drives, considering their lifespan.
They are nowhere near as long as a normal magnetic one would be.

The fact that Dell discontinued the mini 9 so quickly and jumped to 10 with standard drives also supports my suspicions.

I cannot even use the Acer ones that are plentiful here if i run into another failure.

The third party mini9 replacement equivalent is R735, but after ordering amounts to around R870 for an 8gb module.

Its so expensive for something i consider insignificant for the price.

That SDD shown in the video is $259(cheapest i can get) and costs more then i paid for this netbook.
Even so i really do not want to tinker with the mini, in case i want to flog it off to some unsuspecting customer and get the dell mini 10 or 12 with a magnetic HDD.

I would love to know if there is a place in SA that sells these models second hand or cheaply, because i received a quote from a supplier for this same STEC 8SSD drive preloaded with XP SP3 for R1350!!!!!!:s

My buddy reckons he can get an old PATA notebook HDD from his work.
Now its down to finding a suitable converter for the Dell mini 9 as the only ones that i find are for the Acer.

If i can get this right, i would be the first person as far as Google is concerned to get that right(Goodluck with that im telling myself):wtf:

Out of curiosity is there space to fit a notebook drive in there? Reason I'm asking is I have two lying on my desk here (trying to recover data) and they are pretty big. Those 1.8" drives they use in iPods etc might be a better option but they are also slow from what I have read.

Sorry to reply so late to Ponder.

There is no space for a notebook drive at all.

Like i said in an earlier post imagine a little square the size of the Nokia BLC5 battery.

Still i could still work around it by inventing a ribbon cable adapter that does not exist.

You are spot on about the Ipod drive being usable in the mini9.

But it involves a hell of alot of modding with solder and a few guys actually crispy fried their netbooks after it was reported that the wires melted and then popped the machine.

Maybe one day a hobbyist pc-engineer will find this post from Google and invent a workaround.

Until then im gonna have to order a 16GB SSD for R709 and wait about a month for it to be available to me.

I stumbled on to this forum last week because I have exactly the same problem as what you had I'm just a few years too late in finding out about it

I've put in my order for a 16GB super talent ssd which I might receive in the next two weeks but the reason for me posting a thread is because I would really like to know,

After you got your new ssd could you install windows without the ssd failing because as you know its f@#*n expensive to replace it and if you did install semi-faultless how did you achieve it

Also ran a netbook (Acer SSD type) as a torrent server until replacing it with a microserver. This works a lot better for the job and costs only a little bit more than the 32 GB drive from Sybaritic.

I also spent time looking at how to do a proper SSD replacement on the Acer, the 8 GB was a little bit too small. In the end this is not really financially feasible if you look at how cheap it is to buy more modern hardware new.

Another good thing about going for a microserver is that it is meant to run 24/7, unlike netbooks / laptops. If you repair your Dell and put it back to this task it may suffer another failure in the foreseeable future since it is doing something that it is not meant to do.
