My personal stance on E-tolls are I refuse to get an E-tag and I refuse to pay.

Now my problem is i recently purchased a car (2nd hand) and the licence took a week or two to be transfered to my name and in that time I racked up about R700 Tolls - and the dealer forwarded me the bill the previos owner recieved.

Personally I don't want to pay but thats my stance I guess not the previous owners - Im willing to have an unpaid amount on my name, but i'm not comfortable having an unpaid amount on someone elses name.

So i guess i have to pay a little to the Evil Scamral :(

WHat would you guys do?

Pay the dealer and tell him you are not registering or paying just get a receipt.

I can just pay via EFT and use the previous owners Account number as a reference so I don't need to register.
Just the Dilemma im protesting something but dont feel the need to force another to protest as well if not willing (even though I think they helping a corrupt system)

Forward the amount to the previous owner and tell him to pay it as you're not from Gauteng

edit: oops, didn't see your subsequent reply

Or you can do it the way Sanral wants you to do it - let the previous owner fill in the nomination form and hand that form in (requires a copy of your drivers license)

How in the world do you rack up R700 e-tolls in 2 weeks?

I read this morning on here that they extended the Grace period until 1 June. So you should pay much less if you pay before then.

Very very easily. You can rack up ~R60 just doing one trip to Midrand from the south and back. It would be something like R15 with an e-tag or early payment discount, but we refuse to tag or pay.

I pass 2 toll on the way to work everyday. so thats 4 a day - 20 in a work week. 2 weeks = 40 +I visited family on the weekends and pass a lot more then that!
at +/- R15 - R20 per toll gate and you can do the math.

Hence i protest the system with all their claims you wont pay more then a R200 a month!

Grace period only applies if you register with SANRAL and agree to their (insane) terms and conditions

Aah I see! I also haven't payed any E-Tolls. But didn't know the grace period only applies to e-tag holders.

So what do we do when we get pulled over? Summoned to court etc?

Nothing. You can't legally get pulled over for unpaid eTolls.

uhh no don't want them to have my money no way in hell i want them to have anything else

As newviper said, you don't need to pay but now liable for the toll fee (and not the previous owner).

But I see your point - why give them more information?

I have been driving a car which isn't registered to me; so I've been filling out nomination forms. I reckon that they already have my details (ID number in invoice)...

There should be a way to transfer the debt to somebody else. Have them tell SANRAL to transfer the debt to you and then ignore it :P

That is what you think... They are handling this the same as unpaid fines. Lock you up, etc...

No they can't, they can only arrest you if a summons has been issued in your name and you did not attend the hearing and the judge ruled that you be arrested. Not 1 summons has been issued for e-toll "offences".

They don't lock you up for unpaid fines.

Yes, you're correct. The only time they should lock you up (until the next court day) is if you ignored the court summons and now there is a warrant of arrest for you.

But with the abuse of power metro police, the might just lock you up for the night and come up with BS reasons. This is what happened to my friend when he got very cheeky with the metro cops one evenin when getting pulled over. If I remember correctly they accused him of abusive language and threatening gestures or something. The next day they just let him go.

The issue is that the majority are scared and not clued up about their rights. Also the majority don't have the money, time or will to put up a legal fight against the metro cops that locked them up in the first place.
