My experience purchasing from the Microsoft Store

In the first place, did anyone purchase hardware from the SA MS store before, if so, what was your experience? I purchased the Lumia 640 XL yesterday. The order process was flawless but I did notice that I wasn't asked to log in to my MS account at any time. The order confirmation was received from a SA based company called Digital Life, which I presume does the order fulfilment on behalf of MS. I contacted the toll-free support number today and the agent informed me that there is no online system for tracking orders or account details. That means, if I misplace my invoice during the 24-month warranty, I will not have proof-of-purchase, unless the on-site database survived the test of time.

I also asked for specific detail on the terms of the warranty, which is not available on the website. Furthermore the agent informed me that I am responsible for the delivery cost to the designated third-party repair centers in my province. The bottom line is that, if it wasn't for the fact that Vodacom doesn't stock the 640 XL, I would've never bought it from the online store, the service is just not comparable. Having said all that, I'm really looking forward to use this as my daily runner and will just overlook the minor inconveniences :)

Why not send your comments to the GM of the local subsidiary? He probably has no idea how this is being handled. He can raise it in the right place and possibly have the appropriate changes made.

Good idea, but at the moment the agent is doing a good job in escalating my concerns and responding promptly to my queries. Gotta include them in my MS affinity

Tip: Downgrade from Windows 10 Mobile on a Windows Phone 8.1 Handset
https://www.thurrott.com/mobile/win...e-windows-10-mobile-windows-phone-8-1-handset

While Windows phone fans have been waiting impatiently for the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade on their existing Windows Phone 8.1 handsets, the truth is, this may not be an ideal upgrade for many. The good news? If you find that Windows 10 Mobile isn’t working well for you, you can roll it back to a stock Windows Phone 8.1.x install.

A few weeks back, when Microsoft announced that it had finally released the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade for existing phones, fans were elated: We’ve been waiting months, after all, for an upgrade that was originally scheduled for November 2015. But then reality struck: Microsoft is supporting this upgrade on a suddenly limited list of recent and/or high-end Windows phone handsets, angering many fans who had held onto devices that Microsoft had previously said would work.

But here’s the thing. When Microsoft did announce this upgrade, I started resetting my own Windows phone handsets back to their original Windows Phone 8.1.x images so that I could test what the real-world upgrade experience was like. And in doing so, I was reminded of something that I suspect will belatedly occur to many other Windows phone fans: Windows 10 Mobile is in fact, far less elegant, full-featured, and reliable than Windows Phone 8.1. And while the allure of the new is strong, the older OS is in fact a better fit on many of these devices.

Put another way, you may get upgrader’s remorse: After waiting months for the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade, you may discover that you wish you hadn’t performed the upgrade.

Seeming coincidences makes me smile :D I just happened to read this exact article on Thurrot's site this morning, and I am indeed right now rolling back to 8.1! But, not on my 640, just on my old 720 which didn't behave too well with 10 mobile. My experience so far on the 640 was very satisfying. Apps load very quickly, Cortana doesn't lag as on the 720 and I just can't find any fault with this release (10586.218, released on Tuesday for non-insiders). I've been on the preview since very early and stuck it out through all the up and downs, not turning back now!

BTW, I absolutely can't believe that Thurrot said "Windows 10 Mobile is in fact, far less elegant, full-featured, and reliable than Windows Phone 8.1..." It boggles my mind that a man of his stature can make such a remark, after writing THE book on Mobile 10 (maybe there is some truth about mobile waves frying your brain)! The functionality on Mobile 10 is lining up nicely with Windows 10 and I just love the seamless integration between the various apps. The experience that I have using Phone 8.1 now is the same as using Windows 8.1, it all just feels so retro...
