So, after the issues I had with a previous dealer and many of you telling me to walk away - I did!

I found another Volvo, albeit a 2.0 diesel and R35,000 more expensive.

By the way, does lower particles in the diesel do anything for performance?
Or purely cleanliness and reliability?

Any thing really different from a petrol I should know about ?

Thanks !

D3 (110kw / 320nm) and a 2014.

PDC front & rear / Park Pilot / Active & bending Xenon / Keyless entry & drive and my favorite feature (though standard) is the TFT dashboard.

Go as low Sulphur as you can find for the longevity of your oil.
I found significant performance and economy differences between different brands. Shell ultra was best for me.
Enjoy the effortless torque :)

Sweet ride!!

I've got a V40 D4, and had an XC60 D5 (with pole*) prior to this.
I only filled 50PPM in the D5, so I cannot really comment about performance. That thing was a pocket rocket on its own!

I've tried both 50PPM and 10PPM in the V40 now, and there isn't a noticeable difference in performance.
The main benefits is on the cleanliness. It keeps the engine running a little smoother and a little quieter.

I'd recommend Sasol 50PPM. That is about THE best fuel that I've come across in years, across multiple vehicle brands.
Clean and performs excellently. In terms of fuel economy, it's also by far the best I've gotten.

On the XC60 D5, which is 70L, I consistently got nothing less than 900kms to a tank, of local driving.
On an open road, I did approx 1300 on a tank on about 3 occassions.

Have fun in that ride! It's AMAZING!!

Oh and one last thing, depending on where you are (coast or inland), the vehicle will perform differently.
Quite differently to a Petrol vehicle at those two areas.
The altitude inland can account for a significant decrease in performance due to the Turbo Lag that is experienced.
If you are inland, or plan on going inland/coast, take you vehicle to the dealership, ask them to check for software updates, and reset the gearbox for you.

Thanks guys !

@ snowwolf - regarding performance, even turbo'd ?

I've heard that Sasol diesel is the cleanest, but I don't have a diesel so can't guarantee that.

Just keep to your service intervals, or if you go DIY, do a oil change every half service interval.
You will hear the engine being noisy at end of normal intervals.

I use Total 50ppm, haven't seen any 10ppm pumps at the coast yet.

Nice ride and enjoy!

Yup, even on the Turbo's.
Getting the software updated and gearbox reset does help with the gear ratios at the altitude.
Helps with consumption as the box isn't constantly staying in a higher gear than it needs to be.

10PPM is only produced up at Sasol in Secunda. I've only seen it in GP and that too, at certain stations.
It's too costly to transport to the coast as the tankers are also different to those used for 50PPM and 500PPM.

to you diesel gents out there. have any of you heard of or had to replace an egr valve?

cost me a pretty penny on my 2nd hand polo tdi and I only had it for 6 months.

I have heard about them getting clogged up and that you can clean them.

How many kilometers, how much did you get it for ? And dealer or private ? You can MP if you want for this.

I'm planning to get a D4/T4/D5 recent second hand soon !

If egr failed I'd just delete it and block off.
The ASV on my wife's tdi failed, I sourced one from overseas for less than half of the price here.
I think the tandem pump is also on its way out, leaking a bit. Will do the same thing.

Wasn't me on the N1 ... Sorry!

@ f2wohf ... 2014 / 45,000km / Tom Campher Volvo / R315,000

On the diesel side in the V40, there's no D5 - choice is D2, D3 and D4.

Always been a big Volvo fan. Previously had two C30 T5 R Designs as well and glad to be back

I cleaned mine this weekend (Audi A4, B7). The exhaust side was clogged up very badly; I doubt that the valve could open even if it wanted to. Cleaning it made a significant difference to the car's performance, and fuel consumption seems to be better as well.

Read up on Google - it is pretty easy to do. Mine has three consumables - two gaskets and an O-ring - in the assembly. If you can, try to source them beforehand. They're pretty cheap; it should cost you less than R100 to replace all three.
