My first DSLR shot

Do that only at the end and keep the original.
Also try Photoshop's "Smart Sharpen".
Layers :)

Although when you open a RAW file in PS it doesnt save to that format so you'll always have the original.

When you use save for web it doesnt embed the Color Profile [sic].

What are the pro cons of this? I use save for web for all my final saves to jpeg once I have converted from raw and done my other bit and bobs in PS2. Is that good or bad?

For the majority of things its going to be fine - including web and prints from your local camera shop.

I think we got that white balancing sussed (along with a couple other tweaks) :)

Nice work bwana!

I'm heading out there again tonight - going to try to correct a few of my previous mistakes. I'll post the results if they're any good :)

Thanks

Have fun - its probably not going to look 100% out of the camera if you're shooting RAW. :)

The results from tonight. Setting the custom whitebalance beforehand and finding out which knob on the tripod tighteng the swivel action probably account for the biggest improvements :)

Shot in RAW, Saved as jpeg with Photoshop/Camera RAW. No PP done at all, they're all saved as shot.

EDIT: fixed the linky.

Nice shots. :) What did you use to do the CWB?

My understanding is if you shoot RAW there is always post processing - in this case Photoshop is doing it all for you.

Thanks! It's all coming back to me - this ain't no K1000 but I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

There's a ladder thingy to go into the river or down to something - you can see it in the third shot in the bottom left corner. It has a sign saying "hold on" or something to that effect - white background. It's not directly in the spot lights, but just under it. Seemed to work OK.

I guess then Photoshop is doing whatever the camera would have been doing if I was shooting jpeg. I would be interesting to compare the "As shot" output in photoshop with jpegs from the camera. The 40D can shoot RAW+JPEG so this should be easy to achieve. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Cant see it - its prompting me for a username/pwd.

Mine as well - the only time I ever use jpg though is if I'm running out of space and need to shoehorn more shots onto the card apart from that - well I'm way too much of a control freak. :)

On what link? If you navigate to this linky first you should be able to click through everything in it.

That said I haven't gotten the hang of Gallery2's permission model yet. I have yet to find a way to make some albums completely public, and some completely private - I have no wish to share my personal pics with the whole world (just so the family can stop hassling me for pictures). Right now the only workable compromise I've found is to make everything hidden and navigate directly to the album url.

Hehe, I like to be in control too (hence moving away from the P&S) but I'm definitely going to have to work on some sort of workflow because getting everything in, sorting the good ones from the bad ones and converting everything is taking a lot of time.

Seems to be working again :)

You'll learn to be ruthless - at 10mb a pop (40+ once you push it through photoshop) you'll have to be. :o

How big are the RAW files on the Canon? I guess the ones from the 40D will be the same size as the 400D?

A quick scan reveals between 9 and 12 mb.

Interesting - I guess they use some sort of lossless compression. On the K100D they're about the same range.
