That's mbits/sec or Mbps and definitely not MB/sec.
I've been using a 400GB MyBook (USB2) for about 6 months on Linux and so far no troubles.
Someone needed to send me data from Norway and our bandwidth is too expensive here so they sent me the data via the mail - 400GB for free.

Felt like it but what can you do - I had just paid for 2x300 gb ones before I realised they were USB2 and not dual so I had to stand in a nice long post xmas returns queue.you should have bitch slapped there bumb asses and tunes them you want one,, but way dont you get another internal harddrive?
No room in my mini for another drive - it's the primary part of my home entertainment system so the small footprint was worth the sacrifice. I can just put the firewire enclosures in a cupboard and pretty much forget about them.
I recently bought (or rather my father's place of employment bought him) a 120GB, 5 400RPM, USB2 Western Digital Passport external HDD for R2 400.
My PC only has USB 1.5 (am going to get a new one soon), but the hard disk is still painfully slow on USB2! WD claims it's fast enough to run applications and even high-end games from, but I find it's hardly fast enough to watch DivX movies.
Additionally, the external sides of the HDD are "aesthetically sloped" and extremely smooth, making it nearly impossible to lift or carry it in any way other than to slide it off the edge of a table onto one's hand and holding it like that, somewhat defying the purpose of a "portable" hard disk.
It's was a terrible rip off, in my opinion. It isn’t even heavy enough to use as a paperweight.

I think the problem is you're trying to access the drive through USB1 which iirc has a transfer speed of about 12 Mbit/s max. USB2 however has a max speed of 480 Mbit/s.

It sure does - at least mine does - have you tried using one on the other side to see if it makes a difference?
What is the device and/or bus showing up as in the system profiler?

No, I connected the HDD to a PC with USB 2.0 (on all ports) and I got speeds of up to 70 Mbit/s, which is faster than USB1, but still very much slower than USB2. Maybe there is something wrong with the HDD, since I get much faster speeds with USB2 flash disks on PC's which support USB2.
On my PC with USB1, I never get anything more than 2Mbit/s! It craaaaaaaaaaawls

dude have you heard of the small company LACIE? they are THE best external harddrive makers. are when it comes to USB2, it's very possible to play games through it, i do all the time. I got me one of the 100gig lacie 2.5" harddrives(only usb2 no firewire
) and i love it to bits, and at lans its a pleasure coz in stead of the monkeys copying shyte via the network i just give them the harddrive. Oh and most important, the lacie harddrive are designed by F.A.Porsche and its not that polished smooth, it's like a fluffy smooth .Dude, there's something wrong with your USB setup then.
There are two versions of USB 2.
Full Speed : 12 Mbits/second
High Speed : 480 Mbits/second

I get sustained transfer rates of over 20MiB/sec and I edit aerial photos that are larger than 20 GiB each (100000x70000 pixels) without any problems.

i just wondering but where the F%$K do you get 20gig pictures(100000x70000 pixels) from? and im pretty sure its gonna take a bitch long time for you to get a 20gig picture to edit,
Well they are 20GiB+ when they are uncompressed.
They normally come in MrSid, ECW or ECW JPEG 2000 format which is able to compress images at up to 50:1 ratio without noticeable artifacts forming.
However they are typically compressed at 15:1 and that's the reason why I got the free disk.

Usb and Firewire is a waste of time compared to eSATAII.
Ive liked the idea to carry around an extra 320gb, but after going through 2 External Nexstar enclosures and a 320gb Hdd.....
They cant seem to cope with the stress I put them under...
