My graphics card hit a wall

A wall called GTA4. My 7900GT has done good by me. Even got through Crysis while still looking decent. But GTA looks awful and runs awful. So next month I'm going to try and pull together around R1500...R1800 at the most, to get a new (preferably NVIDIA) card to allow me to keep playing the latest games for awhile yet.

The thing is, I have a 400W PSU so whatever card I get needs to have a similar power consumption to my 7900GT, as I just don't have enough cash now to also upgrade the power.

Any ideas?
 
Yea well xp is fine, try sell your card for 500 bucks and buy a 4850, you can also look around the forum and check if esquire still have that myBB special for a nvidia 295 for 1.6k ex vat.

Well the 9600GT only needs a 400 watt.

I say sell your card for R500 and use the cash to get a cooler master extreme 460watt. Then use that R1800 to get a 4830.

Just one thing though, GTA4 is very cpu heavy. What cpu do you have?

I'm afraid unless it's in the 3.5GHz+ kind of arena, a new graphics card is going to be squat all help.
GTA IV is possibly one of the worst ever ported games from the xbox360.

You need a highly clocked quad core for smooth game play on that particular title, ..anything more than a 4870 1GB / GTX260 216 level card is not going to increase fps anything remotely noticible..

CPU dependant.. for the most part..
 
Bugger, well I'd still like to upgrade the old card. Don't have the cash for a motherboard and cpu upgrade as well.
 
Upgrade the graphics card first, and try to get the best one you can currently afford, then atleast you will handle other games well, then maybe later on upgrade the whole pc so you can max out gta4.
 
No dude you just need a new card, you have below the minimum vga card required, 7950 i think it was.

Silver to max out gta4 i would imagine and overclocked i7 sli 295's :p still might not max it out.
 
I don't need it playing perfectly on the highest settings. Just want it to look decent and run smooth.

The Nvidia 250 is looking like a good bet. My PSU should cope.

Had no luck finding that Esquire special. Anyone have an idea or of some other places to to get it from?

woah! i think my pc needs a MAJOR update then, the days of just making it have passed
 
Okay, I'll do that next week. Any ideas for a backup? A card in the R1500-R1800 range.
