My graphics card hit a wall

Again, unf. it's the CPU that will make this particular game smooth, even on the lowest settings, smooth gameplay is determined by the CPU. You may be able to turn graphics up somewhere near medium, but it's still be chugging along like a slide show..
 
Well my mate has a 4850 and a E5200 at 3.3ghz...he says he gets smooth gameplay in GTA4...like 30fps+

Tried it on mine and it was like 15 - 27 fps... :(

Smooth is subjective, I'll have to see this to believe it.

So 3-4 fps over yours and it's suddenly smooth? I doubt it.

I bet he's just quoting the max fps he sees and disregarding the dips.

I'm not saying a slide show, that's an exagerration, but NOWHERE near "smooth", as in seamless..
 
The only reason u might need a high clocked quad is due to bad coding by the devs

They probably get paid more to code badly because we all have to go out and upgrade our pcs thus making the manufacturers richer
