So here is my story.

i started in january 2010 for a company. For my own good i wont divulge information about what type of work it is where and for who for fear that my employer might read this or one of his colleges that would spell disaster for me.

i studied x amount of years and currently get R2000 a month which is less than the secretary who started after me. i have to work for an 2 of years to finish my "training". so in February the people working there has other "things"(this means they are not there in the office any more) to do but they still work there. I have been alone at the office with the secretaries since march.

This is very stressful and its starting to get to me. i have so much work that some days i dont know how i am going to get through it all and on top of that i do i go the extra mile for the firm with things i dont have to and i do it solely to better the company.

and what has this gotten me you ask?

absolutely nothing, not even a thank you.

whaaaaaaaa what should i do, leave? what what what what?

Mate, you studied and are only earning R2k a month. The answer is hitting you square in the face with the obvious bat...

R2000 a month are you freaken KIDDING ME?

a garden boy makes more than that and gets a free lunch every day

Firstly. I wouldn't leave before the end of your "training" especially if you signed a contract prior to the training since this will make you liable for the costs of said training. If you didn't then go ahead and leave.

Secondly, try stating your case to your employer stating you feel you are being under-paid or just ask politely for a raise or a meeting to discuss a raise.

Don't do any work outside what you were hired to do, clearly it is getting you no where. Do the bare minimum. If he asks you to do something you weren't hired to do, refuse and state you don't get paid for that. This might make things comfortable for you but rather that than sit around and be pushed around for peanuts.

I was with a company that did the same to me... worked 4 years and only got 1 increase of R3.50/hr. WHat kept me there was the fact they sent me on training and resigning would mean I had to pay it back which wasn't cheap. So what i did ( and i don't recommend this if you looking for a reference from him ) was slacked off on my work, and eventually got fired... was the best day of my life. He tried to bill me for the training but I showed him the toffee.

Ye thats like R12.50/hr on an 8hr/day 20days/month. My ground guys get double that and all they do is make sure the okes on the ropes get what they need and sweep up at the end of the day.

How the heck do you guys survive off R2k per month? That's petrol and smokes alone for me. I started on R6k p/m 4 years back, which went up to R13k the next year and a few smaller increases the next 2 years. And that's without a tertiary qualification! Was studying while working though..

Anyway the point is that a working relationship is a two way street. Employers will try and get as much out of you as possible for as little as you're willing to accept. If you don't put your foot down then nothing will change unfortunately. Like the guys above said, you either need to schedule a meeting with them or leave if you're not happy.

Obviously this assumes that your position is not something like an articles clerk.

How do you feel about fresh out of highschool call center people earnin R8000 pm??
It would help if you tell us what training it is.

I'd work for R2000 ONLY if I was a pornstar in training otherwise hell no!!!!

Are you by any chance a CA in training? Surely people who study a minimum of 4 years to get their PGDA (Post-Graduate Diploma in Accounting) should earn more than R2k/month? Or are you a LLB graduate-in-training?

acidrain that's not even a liveable salary for a beginner. why the heck must someone stay for that amount of money and be used as a slave on top of it. yes do read your contract and what is required from you. if the duties that they are passing on to you are not specified in your contract then by all means tell them you are not required to do them. if all else fails look for another job. there are other jobs out there you just have to find it.

I never said it was liveable, but if the company is paying for his training and he resigns, only if he has signed a training agreement, then he is liable for all costs of that course, which is not worth resigning over unless he is willing to cough up

Won't be auditing/accounting, that is regulated by the accounting board or whatever they call themselves. Besides I was doing my "time" as an article clerk back in 1996 and that is what I earned then at the VERY bottom of the pile. I would like to think it's gone up a bit since then. One thing I miss about those days was only paying R124 tax. :o

In a dead end "starter" job like that the best thing you could ever do is look for another job...

sounds like a law degree in Bloemfontein, too many lawyers there.
And only lawyers would rip someone off like that

you are problably doing dirty work for conveyancers

I agree - at least tell us in WHAT industry you are.

Started out on my first job at R10k a month, heard some stats the other day that the average for a 4 year degree is between 10 and 12. Obviously different for 3 years, 2 years or 1 year. If the future prospects are good, and you to endure it for a couple of years, beg your parents to let you stay there and ride it out. But yeah, 2k is really nothing. Teachers are paid more than that (hopefully!)

To give you an idea the "labourers" on the side of the street earn R100 a day. Slightly more skilled like plastered/bricklayer etc can earn 200-250. The really good plasteres/bricklayers etc won't be on the side of the street but can get about R350/day.

Dude, I know how you feel.

I worked as an electronics technician (did training) and fixed tv's vcr's gatemotors etc. earning my boss R1k a day profit at the very minimum. I was paid R200 a week.

When my 6 months was up I got out of there without looking back.

Sounds like you are working an apprenticeship, what is your projected income once this is complete?

You would do well to bear that in mind but also: acquire leverage and commence negotiations. Do not enter into negotiations without leverage as you may well find yourself worse off.

Define 'leverage' as you see fit.
