I didn’t know this either. Normally just take it out of the freezer and wait a bit for the ice cream to become soft or if I get impatient I shove it into the microwave for a few seconds .

How does this make a difference? At best it'll keep out a teeny bit more air, but if the ice-cream lid is sealing properly then this ain't gonna do much. Probably better to store your tub at the back of the freezer so it's less prone to temp changes every time you open the freezer.

You want to prevent air from coming into contact with it, so it has to technically be an air-tight bag not just any checkers packet

The take away from this is that I need to go tell the wife to go buy ice cream for research purposes.

That's new. I always just run the scoop or spoon under some hot water. Or even just keep a tub of hot water nearby.
