My mini is using loads of petrol. At the moment I'm filling up with around 20Litres and only getting 115km. The car has a strong petrol smell as well, but figured with it been an old car that might be normal. It sometimes misfires as well.

Any suggestions as to whether there is a problem?

Car's details: 1971 Mini 1100cc. I had the engine recon'ed

Is this a classic that you are very fond of and have great sentimental value towards... or are you poor?

lol wtf

Dude, that's ridiculously bad fuel consumption.
Coupled with misfires and the petrol smell - something has to be wrong.

may just be a leaky pipe somewhere.

yep it is either leaking or burning WAY TOO RICH

for example a friend of mines little uno was leaking just below the carb, small gasket, same thing bad petrol smell and horried consumption.

eventually we found the leak

Can't see any leaks, and theres no real problem to start, unless I leave it standing for a couple of days.

remember thing with fuel is it will evaporate fairly fast, will leave a residue though over time.

i would start at the fuel tank and work my way forward, get underneath with a flash light and take a looky.

maybe parking somewhere that he will be able to see any leaks also might help and maybe timing could be off that its eating alot of petrol

Those old mini's are fun to drive. Check the carb. Fuel mixture is probably too rich or you have some dodgy fuel pipes.
