I'm just impressed by the Braswell all in one, I didn't even know they did HEVC. I'm sure you will be very happy with your current setup.

Will this be your download box too or do you have a server/NAS?

I have an HP Micro server for NAS and my main box (lian-li case) for downloads. This one is just an experiment really and to keep family happy while I watch cricket on the bigger TV :)

Are you not thinking of VP9, WebM is just a container like Matroska aka mkv.

VP9 is a successor to VP8 and competes with MPEGs High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265)

Was considering building a HTPC a while back but got lazy and bought a few Lenova SFF M72e's off Carbonite instead. Upgraded the drives to ssd and increased ram to 8gb!! Units ROCK!! Good for light gaming too. Would love to add dedicated GPU but that would mean PSU upgrade as the 280w they ship with doesn't have much wriggle room for anything significant in the GPU department..Besides the Intel HD4600 onboard holds its own...

Cost including peripherals was around R5k a unit...

How much does x.265 really matter though?
If you just want to casually watch something and not be too concerned about the best quality ever then it's really unnecessary right?

It's less about quality and more about size. The files clock in significantly smaller, for close to the same video quality.
 
Agreed. Big fan of x.265!

Also, if you hoard content or use an account with a FUP or use a capped account, the size benefit is felt all round.

Even streaming over a home network would be less taxing.

I've moved everything over to x265.

720P x265 is the same size as SD x264, a lot of the time x265 is even smaller than the SD x264.

I was watching something 1080P x265 the other day and thought to myself the quality is absolutely amazing and it was only a 1GB file.

What do you use to play your x265 files?

I have the latest version of VLC which is supposed to play x265 material but it does not. Do you need compatible hardware? I am using VLC Player and Plex on a Minix X8-H Plus media player with a Microserver N36L as a NAS.

The HP won't be able to transcode x265 but your Android player should support x265 mkv if you have updated the firmware.

Update the Minix firmware and set Plex to direct play or download and try Kodi or SPMC.

My 2TB died and I replaced it with 2 500gb drives that way just laying around. Decided to take a pic while the case was open.

Looks like it needs a decent clean (actually thinking of trading the mobo in sometime next year.)

It's my gaming machine where I have been changing motherboards from time to time. The PSU is the only thing that has remained over the years.

I am thinking of building a new machine and thinking of going the AMD route with this.
I am out of the loop regarding AMD CPUs so what is the best so far or when is the next release of AMD CPUs getting released?
Also looking at a custom design case that I want to make myself.
