Hey guys.

Ive been having issues downloading stuff on my mweb account. Every download that i do seems to be disrupted, almost as if my internet seizes to exist for a few seconds. I cant do browser downloads because my internet is too unstable. Im on a 384kbs uncapped account with Mweb. I realise that im on a shaped account, but all that should do is affect my speed, not my stability, no? Also, when gaming online, i get latency spikes. One moment my ping is at 70, the next im on 600... Any ideas?

When i was on a 384kbs with 3 gigs cap I had no issues, so its not my line itself.

Note, this is not a "I hate Mweb" post... Mweb has always given me great service. I just dunno wtf is going on with it at the moment.

Thanks

Hi Paladin777, please send me your details so that I can get one of the specialists to give you a call.

Ill have to do so at a later stage, as im at work at the moment and wone be able to recieve calls. Is there anyway you can tell me who to call so I can do so when I get home?

I don't want to speak for the MWeb rep. of course, but this does sound like a Telkom / ADSL connection problem. A few things you could check would be the SNR ratio on your router. Login to the router and look for the details somewhere in the router pages. Also check that the line is not noisy and ensure that any other devices on the line, such as a telephone or a fax machine, are connected correctly through a filter. Reset the router. Get Telkom to test/reset the line. Check that all ethernet cables are securely plugged into the devices. I experienced a problem a while ago where a laptop connected by Ethernet kept losing it's connection. Turned out to be a bad/loose connection in the ethernet jack connecting into the router.

Ok. Thanks SabreWolfy. Ill Have a look at that. I have a phone plugged into the router, so ill remove it and try my connection again. hopefully that'll isolate my problem. Also, should i be worried about my account being shaped? Does it really have an affect of my speeds or not really? Cause a friend told me about Wazzup (http://wazzup.co.za/about.html) they seem cool and are offering 384kbs unshaped at R305 pm. Anyone know about them?

I don't know about them so I can't really comment. If something sounds to good to be true, it probably is too good to be true, or there may be hidden catches and clauses. There are many threads on these forums discussing the issue of shaping. If you are a heavy downloader and want to suck down the internet every month, then get the MWeb Internet Addict / Business package, or one of the heavy downloading packages offered by other ISPs. These are all, of course, quite a lot more expensive -- you get what you pay for. If you are prepared to put up with slower downloads from certain sites / certain protocols during the day and early evening, then you should be fine.

Well, it would be nice to have more consistent speeds cause i use steam quite a bit and the games are rather big. Also, buying music on Itunes is important to me too, and faster/more consistent speeds will make my life better... Ok. Ill look at the other deals with Mweb. I prefer to stay with them.

Thanks again, man

You shouldnt be having any problems with a shaped account if ur using steam/itunes. Isp's shape p2p traffic heavily, so you shouldnt be affected if your using steam/itunes. I have MWEB 4mb uncapped, u know, the el cheapo one, and Steam games I download at full speed.

Thanks for your faith in MWEB, SabreWolfy is 100% correct with checking of your connections. If you are still having problems after checking your setup at home you can give us a call on 0860112252 we are available until 22:00 in the evenings.

Mweb I'm very impatiently and excitedly downloading the new season of Top Gear and Entourage but my torrents are being shaped into the ground, I'm getting 10kb/s on a 2 meg line. Is there a problem on the network or is my account just being shaped to hell and back?

I should add my upload speed is perfect and maintaining to the limit I set (30 kb/s) so chances are its not a line fault)

Hi Guantanamo

There is no network problem that we are aware of on our side.

Not true!

There is at least one open issue that you _are_ aware of -- mine.

This would appear to be another report of network issues, admittedly with a torrent, which you do shape, but nevertheless probably also influenced by the poor international performance some of your users are experiencing.

10kB/s on a 4Mb/s line seems like quite aggressive shaping to me, or is that the performance that is to be expected?

Instead of the denials, perhaps you should be looking into what the problem is.
