So after 2 months of looking around I finally managed to get one. We did the finance and signed all papers - and she was delivered to the office yesterday. Looks great ... drives great ... fantastic! I was happy and popped to my parents that evening to show her.

MY mom takes her around the block - and then my stepfather. Both agree it's fantastic and we go inside for a quick drink before leaving. I was actually off to celebrate with a friend BUT on coming out and reversing, there's this huge (.8m x .8m) puddle under the car and it's dripping something - fast. Substance looked clear but had an oily texture and my mom is freaking because her driveway is now stained :/

Anyhow - rush home (not engine oil and watching the dials) and park her for the night. Put a measuring jug under and sleep. This morning I check the jug and it appears most the stuff came out last night on the driveway - but here's a photo :

What is it?
Coolant? Brake fluid?

EDIT : Car is an 8 month old Volvo with 11,000km

How does the steering feel? Hard or normal? Brakes spongy?
Looks like brake fluid, but could also be from the power steering. Check your fluid levels and see where whats missing.

YEah looks like hydraulic fluid to me.

that just sux. reputable dealership? should have motorplan. take it in to be fixed. coolant is not oily. not that ive seen anyway. mostly a waterlike consistency. brake fluid is a browny colour. wonder if its ATF. but the ATF ive seen is that reddish stuff.

congrats bud! on the new car, not on the problem:(

My bet is on anti-freeze. Brake fluid is clear, turning kind of black once it has been used.

11k km old brake fluid won't be black.
Volvo antifreeze could be green - but it shouldn't be oily. If it was a coolant leak, that amount would have resulted in a warning on the dash I'm sure. Also, steam not water after "test driving" the car.

Yea - proper Volvo dealer and plan to 2017 ... I know it'll be covered as with my old Volvo they covered every issue with a single question. It's just irritating and makes one feel pretty ****ty when they've driven it once to show people ... and it ruins their driveway :/

It has an oily texture for sure and it has ruined my moms driveway :( Nothing on the dash ... one eye constantly on the dial when driving home. AS long it's not engine oil - it seems that it may have just been something lose and really bad luck

Oh - steering and breaks felt normal when coming home ... but it's only a few KM and I don't know what normal is in this car. Steering felt very light compared to my older C30 - but maybe it's the car? Too new to me to make a call

Dude my car had to be towed on the way from the dealer when I bought it! I feel your pain.

... hehe - makes me feel better ;)

Seems cars nowadays often have issues? I posted this on the Volvo forum last night and the one guy was telling me his new TT dumped all all over his garage the first night. My uncle took delivery of a new 335i (new shape too!) earlier this year and it left wouldn't start after 100km ... lose connection or something.

Congrats on the car but good luck, hopefully no serious issues (had my share thanks :( )

In this case (car was 2nd hand) a piece of aftermarket electrical equipment was removed, and the wire wasn't tidied up properly, and the ****ing twat had tapped it off the ECU's power line - so when I went round a corner the wire touched the bodywork and blew the ECU fuse.

... and the people complain about Land Rovers!!!! pfft!

It's a safety feature, as soon as it stops leaking you know your out of oil. :p

Doesn't really matter what the fluid is, take it back to the dealer to sort out.

Dealer will be here shortly - phoned him last last night to sort out

Your cost?

There's your problem right there

Nothing wrong with Volvo at all - I've just traded one for another. Family members drive their BMWs and Audis .... get a Volvo next and ... prefer it. After that the next car is a Volvo again

Norra***. Full maintenance plan, and also I told the dealer I bought it from to effin sort it out NOW. They couldn't, being an audi dealer, but they did drop off another car for me to use while my local preferred VW dealer fixed the problem.

That looks like coolant to me. Coolant can feel slightly thick and could be described as oily, depending on the ratio. If it was hydraulic fluid you would have felt something amiss. It's not engine oil, I've never seen no green engine oil.

In any event its pretty much a new car let them sort it out.
