Gave my IPAD to these guys to tweak it a bit!

So lets look at pricing for the iPad... top of the range 64GB with wifi+3g
USA = 890usd = R6,500 (actual price is 829usd, but excludes state tax)
UK = 699gbp = R8,000
following this trend the iPad will probably cost R10,000 in SA.
So I decided to get it early for this this price from the US, thank to have2have.co.za
con is that TheCore group will not honour the warentee. I WILL LIVE WITH THIS.

Nah that's too much for me. R10k! I won't pay more than R4k-5k, seeing as it starts at $500 = R3655
 
Had the opportunity to use one for about an hour yesterday (at daughter's karate class - one of the other parents) - must say I came away very impressed. For that context it is perfect - much less bother than a laptop, easy to browse on, do a few quick emails, watch a video podcast (or a movie) - must say, I was a sceptic up till now, but the ipad really is a cool piece of tech.

PS: The person who it belonged to has replaced his travel laptop with the device - all he was using the lappie/netbook for was to do the odd email, and mostly, view presentations - any 'heavy lifting' is done when he is at his base in Jhb or CT.

Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Pity I don't have that kind of cash available.....
 
Looks like a funky piece of hardware but I just can't justify the price for one. I love the bit at 1 min 11 sec in the vid...lol. Can't wait for the motion control blending coming up once Sony and Microsoft have released their new devices!

It's possible to knock something without trying it. It's done all the time in science when one researcher discovers something and a few others review him. The rest (millions) basically then go with the opinion of the lot combined.
 
Yes because they can usually prove the statement is not correct objectively. This is subjective, if someone says they like something and they think it's great, that's subjective and you can't really say that they're wrong.
 
Received my 64GB WiFi+3G a few weeks ago, cost me R10G's ... Was a tough decision as it is a hell of a lot of money, and you can probably get a decent laptop for half of that. Well, after owning it for a few weeks now, I can now honestly tell you that if I lost it and they doubled the price, I would definitely buy another one!

It's not as black and white as you think. Reviewers often criticise study design or bias - even if it's not there or may not be significant. Then the study has a black mark hanging over it. Black and white stuff - i.e. stuff which is outright wrong never even gets published and is thrown out by journal editors or principal investigators / mentors. Often one group of reviewers like a study, a second group condemn it. Those who don't have the time to go into the detail follow the group they consider to be most authoritative in their locality or follow political decisions (who provides funding, what a given stance can give them in terms of their own future work etc).

Here you have a given device, with known specs, known apps and known tolerances. There is no mystery here. One can just based on the specs alone decide if the device is fit for his given purpose, after all Apple stores have a 20% restocking fee and don't provide evaluation models. Hence review is the only reliable way of testing a device before buying.
 
I want one of those blenders for old pc peripherals and cellphones at work.
 
The iPad has it's place. It's the first great thin client IMO. I would never pay R10k for one though. R4k-5k tops.

Not at all .... I use a HTC HD2 and I'm very happy with it, just about everybody I work with have iPhone's. Never been an Apple fan at all. The iPad just looked like a lekker toy for web browsing, checking e-mail, catching up on my downloaded episodes of Top Gear etc. I was worried about spending that much money on something I would not use enough, but now that I have one, I just find myself using it a hell of a lot more than I expected. So, for the amount of time I'm spending on it, I feel the cost is absolutely justified. My little girl also loves all the kiddie books and games that I've loaded for her.

I bought the ipad a few weeks after release in the US. Was not badly priced if one buys it there in person. I got it mainly as an e-reader but I have found that I often use it for taking quick notes, listening to music, browsing and playing games. I would call it a coffee table laptop. It was worth the money for me only because I wanted an e-reader that supports kindle, barnes and nobles etc all in one device.

I'm sorry but that is just not true.

Subjective appreciation can imply you like the aesthetics of the thing.

You can objectively appreciate it however, the display has a size and a resolution, the thing has a weight, it has specific capabilities (CPU, battery, gpu, memory, storage, OS, apps) - it's not a piece of modern art but a technical gadget.
