i got a new workstation yesterday and now today its just decided to crash..... our IT guy seems to think it might be the HHD thats giving the prob as we took my old pc's HHD and put it into the new pc.

we've started to run the windows repair setup but now it does not want to coplete the setup. it keeps giving the following message:

Setup cannot copy the file : advapi32.dll

and it gives me the following options to fix this:
ENTER to retry
Esc to skip the file with this CAUTION Message: if you skip this file, setup may not complete and windows XP may not work properly.

F3 to quit setup.

Any ideas/solutions??

I say it is heat causing the problem... that or the CD/DVD rom... Every time I got these kind of errors was when the CPU ran to hot.

First things off - your IT guy should have tested the memory first with memtest86+

Then take things from there.

If it is heat causing the problem, then it's a poor design. But test the RAM first.

Brand new also do give problems in the form of latent defects.

What might test 100% at final QA might pop 3 months later down the line.

So I tend to test the RAM first, then take things from there.

Also - the PC is brand new, why wasn't it returned to the supplier before your IT guy opened it? Now the warranty's probably voided.

What PC's are you using? Brand name?

+1 on above. If its brand new it should be returned to the supplier and not fiddled with.

Usually you get a new HDD with a new PC?

Re-reading the OP's post gives two meanings - either they re-used her old HDD, or they swapped out the new (supect) HDD with her old HDD.

In either case Windows was giving problems - before and during the install.

I want to make sure regarding the RAM before proceeding.

The OP can also request a new (different) HDD to be tried tho.

Never skip files.

Normally its the dvd rom/cd rom etc that is the problem or the memory, i find mostly the memory. Why may i ask is your IT not figuring this out lol

usually these errors has got to do with defect hardrive. The error alone from the repair suggest to me it cannot write the file to the hardrive section or the cd/dvd is defective.
Reformat:Dand do this 4 times,no quick formats for you chap. The real deal

Why would it always stop at the same file? Maybe the installation CD is forked.

The ppl who do our IT build the pc for us so its not a brand name pc.
New Mobo, Ram Prcessor and DVD romand bew box is what we paid for.The old pc's Mobo gave in and it was quite and old mobo and the RAM was also difficult to get hold of.We didnt want to get a new HHD as it would have been too much hassle to have all our stuff copied over to a new HDD eventhough we make regualr backups...

Thats the Prob, i dont want to have the drive formated. as the last backup was made 2weeks ago :( Its month end and i have to run monthend before the end of the week and have all our inv printed, and this pc was the only one with the licensed software on it. So there is absolutely no way that it can be formatted now

@ alisia - as test ask the IT chappie to try installing to a new HDD and see if that works.

But I'm sure it's the memory.
