Looking back now it's insane to think that around the time the i5 2500K or similar launched 10 years ago we basically had enough computing power for most stuff to last for a decade or more.
Return on investment for hardware from that time is insane.
(Remember when a top tier PC build was around 10-15K, try getting away with that budget today, that's barely decent GPU money today)
I recently semi-retired my i7 3770 (was an i5 2500K for most of its life) for a small mini pc (Ryzen 4800H).
Granted, the new Mini PC slays it in terms of performance but to be honest, for most daily tasks and even hammering it with work (tons of open apps, database engineering, sheets, coding etc.) you'd be hard-pressed to notice a difference, even the NVME SSD that's leagues faster than old 1st or 2nd gen SATA SSD's don't really give you any day vs. night feeling that the benchmark numbers suggest.
Thing is, I retired it not because it was too slow or anything, I did it pre-emptively knowing that 11-year-old hardware must surely die at some point.
It's still running strong and I use headlessly for occasional gaming via remoting (using Parsec).
It even runs most Steam VR Titles for my Quest 1 just fine on a GTX 1070 bought 4 years ago for R2.6K (looks at today's prices and weep).
Like I always say, I think the proliferation of tech channels on Youtube and the constant competition for views etc. by showing off the latest and greatest are doing people a disservice by giving them the wrong impression of what you really need vs. what people implicitly make you think you need.
