I dunno if this is iable, but can we build our own network? Not necissarily to access the internet, but as a loose, peer-to-peer wireless network? How much does WiMAX hardware cost?

I'm not talking about EVERYONE just yet, but I would like to do it in my town.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could set up a wirless LAN in my town. What are the maximum ranges, reccomended hardware etc...

Welcom n00berizer. Suggest you have a look at www.jawug.za.net for some info on what is involved in setting up a peer to peer wireless lan.

You will find tons of useful info on the site.

WiMAX hardware is not generally used for peer-to-peer networks, too expensive. WIFI is generally used.

As Ryder said see JAWUG website, there is plenty of info there.

The ranges are generally, if you can see it you link to it. 12KM links are common.

LOL what good is 100m bluetooth for file sharing, why not walk the distance and put on a cd, it will be much quicker anyway:D

What about mount edgecombe durban. Any one round, maybe willing if there are a few guys around.

Umhlanga as well... There is a nice LOS from the edge of Umhlanga to the Durban CBD, perhaps it will help facilitate a link to Mount Edgecombe?

well i'm basically on top of the driving range in mount edgecombe so i don't have line of sight to umhlanga maybe some one in mountedgecombe that is closer to umhlanga can connect to umhlanga then from umhlanga to durban north? i got a good view of Phonex (Spelling) though.

no, haven't got any equipment and want to know that i got a resonable chance of getting this right before i spend my $$$.

EDIT i do have a wireless adsl modem "linksys wag354G". But i don't think it can connect to other wireless hubs. or can it?
