My bro & I just built ourselves a PC. Its a Q9550 with 3GB RAM + 2x 250GB HD's, old Genius Sound Card + a 9800 GT.

The above setup is powered by a 580w Gigabyte Power Supply & all my goodies are stored safely inside a Aero Cool case, its the Racer one in Red & Black.

My bro said we needed a UPS, so we ordered a Proline one through a buddy of ours as well as the rest of our parts.

Whenever we use the PC, we get a horrible burnt rubber or metalic smell coming from the UPS & the back of the PSU. We took the PC to Incredible & they said that there was no probs with how we built it.

We took it home & the UPS makes the room BOIL, its seriously become a furnace in our room, even with the AC cranked to 15c.

The case itself is cool, its just the UPS that is unbelievably hot & the burning rubber smell coming from the UPS & PSU of my case.

I've also noticed now that my friggen Telscum modem the Mega 105 one is boiling hot?

Please okes, help me solve this problem & is this normal to have a UPS run so hot? Do I need a bigger PSU for my current setup?

well my 4870X2 turns my room into a furnace as well, all by itself.

not sure what your solution is though...

I just spoke to a chappy in CT that stocks them, he was saying that cuz I have it on a carpet it blocks the vents on the UPS & prevents circulation of AIR through the UPS.

Is that a possibility guys?

Does it have vents on the bottom? Are the "feet" very short?

Then yes, it's possible.

Yes... put it on a flat surface so that air can circulate properly.

Seems like a rather stupid design flaw then. Sounds about right for a company who has piss poor design.

wait wait wait now....let's be logical about this. do you have a long extened power cord and can you put the UPS in the fridge ?

Sounds like a steamy pile of horse manure to me, But hey who knows. If they built a UPS that is not designed to go on a carpet, well then the company shouldn’t be in business IMO.

The UPS shouldn’t get that hot and sure as hell shouldn’t smell like burning. I would unplug that fire hazard asap and take it back. Where there is smoke, there is sure to be fire.

Roflcopterz. My bro has been sitting her with a big book & been trying to fan the thing.

I just phoned 1025 Telkom is gona swap my Modem for me. I'm gona move the UPS to a shelf or just not use it if it carries on like this. :(

Yeah, you'd think companies would have catered for all of this. I think I'm just going to unplug it & see if things still smell burnt in my room & get hot.

Can somebody tell me if I have that special red wall plug for lightening & stuff, would that work against lightening. Also will a UPS help me during lightening? I'm a bit confused as to a UPS's purpose.

Then it should not get boiling hot. Take it back, it'll catch fire, or worse, explode.

Had an 800Va one a while ago, and it never got that hot.

When you say it never got that hot, does it get warm though? I'm trying to guage whats acceptable heat.

A UPS will allow you a few minutes to shut down your PC. You can also configure your PC to shut down automatically as soon as it's on UPS power - i.e. when you're not at the house.
