My PC isnt reading my Ext HDD!

Hi,
I gave one of my friends my Externall HDD so he could give me some stuff... Some how he said his PC could not read it!? So he gave it back and my PC cant read it aswell!
It is very old(2.5-3 years) but it was working fine just before I gave it to him!
Is there a way I can get my PC to read it? It makes loud clicking/beeping noises when turned on:sick:(it did not before)

Take it out of its casing and put it into your pc? sometimes when it has low power it makes the same sound as when its been dropped. :p

Loud clicking sounds means the HDD was dropped or handled incorrectly and is now physically damaged.

If it was working perfectly before, then it could only be one person... Or someone close to that person... :(
 
o well.... it is time for a upgrade anyway!
Putting the HDD in my PC might be a mission ... Im using a laptop!! :O
 
Try another external drive bay... might work, probably won't...
 
Also try attaching the ext HDD to a Linux PC. A friend recently developed major hassles with 2 of his externals under WinXP. It turned out that even right-clicking on the externals and selecting the "Properties", causes XP to write hidden data to the devices. If your anti-virus happens to lock the hardware in order to try and scan the device (for on-access protection), then XP's write may corrupt the device. Linux had zero hassles accessing it after that, even though XP then considers the file-system to be inaccessible.
