ok im confused

ive had a Intel C2D E8200, Asus P5N-D and 4GB DDR-800 (corsair XMS2, with heatsinks) for quite sometime now... perhaps a bit too long.

So now Im getting greedy and looking at upgrading my CPU, RAM and MB.

Im a bit confused as to what is worth upgrading to?

The phenom 2 x3 720 Black Edition looks tasty... but is that really a step up!? Or big enough step up?

Next option would be a Intel Quad... but that is quite a bit more pricey, ah yes then there is then i7... but I dont think I can afford that. MB and CPU alone is gonna set me back R6k :(

Next question is how much do you think I could get for me current CPU, MB and RAM. Suggestions?

Thanks for the help :)

Well i don't think the amd x3 is a step up at all, look at a quadcore from either amd or intel as an extra core does not seem worth all the money to me.

main question here is how much I can get for my current CPU+MB+RAM... that makes a huge differnce to what I can get!

The way I see it, you really have two options: firstly keep your mobo/ram and only upgrade your processor. There's nothing wrong with a p5n-d and 4gb ddr2800 combo... So you'd be looking at a q9550/q9770 depending on your budget to make a significant difference.

Or secondly you can sell everything and buy from scratch. Then again if you go AMD the difference won't really be enough to justify it...unless you go AM3 board/955be combo. It's up to you to decide whether that will be enough for you. I think it probably will.

any idea why the new i7 boards are so damn expensive!? I know its new technology... but R2800 for an entry level board is kinda ridiculous!

There is a vast difference between an i7 entry level and a 775 entry level.

entry level of i7 is actually very high end stuff.

Listed another msi board for r2,300... Yeah I have no experiences with them though.

google this board and see how many people are having heat problems with the NB... you whip up some bacon and eggs on this baby!!! :D

"All that aside, we think MSI has a winner here. The price is right, the quality is great, performance is terrific, and the feature set (CrossFire/SLI) matches that of boards costing up to a hundred dollars more. We have no problem recommending the MSI X58M at this point and look forward to seeing it again in our roundup."

Attach a 60mm Vantec Stealth fan to the NB heatsink and you've got a top board. Simple.

dude, I wasnt saying its a bad board!?

I was merely pointing out that heat is a major factor for a lot of people!

Wollie has a pretty good deal going on an xfs board/920 combo for R5100...he's a reliable seller, I bought off him before.
