S6 & S4 - weak signal where a R599 Alcatel One Touch POP2 works well. Poor battery life.

S3 Mini - puts calls on hold all by itself. Audio fades in & out during calls. Cuts or auto rejects calls when not set to. it sends SMS's when not asked to (sent 18 to a friend recuperating in intensive care!!) and depletes internet data. Updated apps while all settings for auto-updates have been disabled. UI behaves erratic and seems to 'move about' while nobody is even toughing the phone.

S3 - terrible battery life, build quality, same as S3 Mini, is rather iffy. Software issues abound.

J1 Duos - poor battery life, audio fades in & out during voice calls, or auto rejects calls even with feature disabled. Apparently know issue on J1 Duos, a technician said this model is being discontinued. I do like the phone's appearance and also the feel of it in my hand.

Galaxy Pocket - a sterling little device at the price, provided it is being used as a basic feature phone. The only truly functional Samsung ever in my hands.

Compared to the Alcatel as mentioned, as well as BB Z3 and Huawei Y300, really bad stuff. It seems that cheap is not always nasty. The Alcatel is blazing fast on Afrihost mobile data, for the record, and it acts well as a USB modem or wireless hotspot. The Alcatel beats all the phones mentioned above when it comes to connectivity, be it voice or data. the cheap Alcatel feels terrible in the hand but voice quality during calls even betters any of the Samsung's above, despite it not being able to filter out noise from the environment.

Just posted as a matter of interest. Next phone maybe a Huawei P8 Lite, as all I need is >1GB RAM. Galaxy J5 if someone can convince me it is trouble-free. The concept is great.

You're reviewing an S3 about terrible battery life when it was released in May 2012, the mini in October 2012. How old is each device? How long did you run each device? Have you replaced the batteries? When did you use them?

The galaxy pocket got released in 2012, where did you manage to buy it? Again, did you swap battery etc and when did you last use it?

2012 phoned and wants its technology back, plus the J1 is a cheap POS. Don't know what you are expecting from such a device.

Brand new Pocket was unboxed a few days ago, loan unit from Cell C because of problems with brand new j1. See my other post in this regard. S3, S3 & S6 based upon previous experience when these were new.

Buying a phone at around R13 is no guarantee of quality - Samsung & Apple already proved that. I am currently looking at something that has at least 1.5GB RAM and below R5k. There has to be a good buy out there. Middle of the road.

Duracell sells batteries at around R350 a go, this seems to work well and gives 1-2 days on the S3. My BB Z3 had excellent battery life, my best phone since Nokia E63 but camera was just not useful. Even so, at R2500, more value for money than phones costing 4-5 times as much. Reliable, almost unbreakable. i was really, really stupid to have sold it. Don't know BB well, just saw the BB Classic and also the Priv coming soon. A few techies at various cellphone stores all prefer BB Passport over anything else. Reliable, long battery life, excellent all-rounder, QWERTY, etc. And it runs Android apps. Passport not cheap, though.

The way to get Android apps form Playstore safely is to use a backup prgramme on a clean Android phone, then copy the apk over and install on BB (or any other Android phone if you want to conserve data bundle.) No need to go to less safe websites.

P8 Lite is good... But I've had none of the issue you speak of and I've had all the phones mentioned above except the pocket and the J1 was a single sim

My s4 bad signal everywhere, and bad battery. Also their support sucks when it comes to their applications like kies and SmartView. They always take functionality away and I'm sick of them. My Fone has had its motherboard replaced under adh for no apparent reason and I'm moving to Sony now as I need to try another device

Say goodbye to ADH when you move to Sony. The Z5 leaves a lot to be desired. I suggest you do some research before jumping to Sony.

He has two choices. Either a decent modern Android device, or a an iPhone 5/5s.

I'd lean toward the iPhone. Either way both will be in excess of R2.5k.

OP - Otherwise stick to a simple BB if it works for you.

I was going to say that too, but I'm wary talking about Apple in the Android sub forum. :p

Could probably find a 5s for around R3,000. Best iPhone ever.

http://www.apkmirror.com/ Made my AndroidPolice. They scan every apk submitted.

This OP would be a person moaning about CPA when they buy from the China store.

You get what you pay for. Get a new phone.
