I've got the 28-300 which spends more time on the body than anything else. Its probably not as sharp as my 70-200 f/4 L, and it is slower, but it beats it hands down as far as portability goes

I think kj has the 70-300 model.

That's the other thing I wanted to ask you - what is the difference between these 300mm lenses and the macro lenses? Surely they are almost the same?

Macro's are able to focus on things closer to the lens.

I think kj has the 70-300 model.

Yes, I have the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO. As far as I know, it's not quite a sharp as the Canon 70-300 IS, but it's still plenty sharp. I took this picture with it. There's a link for the big version.

The only real downside is it doesn't have IS or HSM, but given the price difference, I'm not about to complain about that.

Thanks! Nice shot! Wow. I had no idea that macro lenses were that powerful. I guess it's because I mostly see images of plants/flowers and insects taken close up.

Uhm, thanks. I hope you read the comments. That's a panorama, made up of five images. But what it does show is that lens is sharp enough on a 10MP camera, and does give good enough colour.
