My turn for advice

if there is something specific you want to buy then don't mention it to the grandparents, go buy it then mention it over dinner or something.

How well I know this scenario... With both our children it was the same. But the difference was, my mother in law wanted to buy more than my own mom, like "buying" our children, which of course didn't work. I must also say it helped a lot, but hell I still dont like those hand knitted booties, and jackets, was soooooooo 1950's!

But on a serious note, buying stuff now is good, but please look out for them telling you later how to discipline your child. That is a job layed upon you, and grand parents most of the time dont like to see their grand children disciplined. My dad in law always says, " the worst 2 things for any child is a grandmother and a scissor", and boy oh boy how true is that.

I had no problem accepting free things from grandparents or any other relatives. We'd bought the essentials like nappies, baby sling and car seat already, but if not there would have been no problem with them buying. If they treat my child in a way I don't approve, then I tactfully let them know. Certain things would get them a warning that a repeat would result in them being barred from contact with the child unless supervised.

Unfortunately both Mr Blu's parents have passed away, so there is only one set of grandparents.

I also spoke to him about my feelings and all he says is: you cannot stop them from giving anything to their grandchild, so just accept it

I think I understand their reasons/motivations (all pure!) a little better now .

if they want to pay why not let them if it gives them pleasure. a good idea would be to make a shopping day for whatever they're planning to buy. go with them and choose what you want and let them pay for it. my oldest grandchild is 14 and i still love buying him stuff.
