I have an Esquire 4GB UBS drive, and a couple of weeks ago it has been giving me problems.

It all started with the USB indicating that there is 1.7GB worth of free space even though the USB was empty, there were no files since I deleted them at that time. I was advised to format my USB by right clicking on it, and it worked after I formatted it. The size once again showed 4GB like it was supposed to in the first place. A day later I transferred files from my work pc to my home pc, tried to open those files (such as an Excel and word document) and they couldn't open, the files from the USB were incompatible with windows, that's what I read from a pop up window. I then tried to format my USB by making use of the "disk management" process, with a file system called "FAT 32". Great! It works, I could transfer files and open them with no problem, so I thought.

Problem now is that files somehow disappear if I open my USB in one pc after transferring those particular from another pc. For example, today, I transferred 2,5GB worth of files in 10 folders from my work pc to my USB. I got home, put my USB into my home pc and checked to see if all the files are there, and they were not. All 10 folders were still there but 4 of them were empty, the rest of the folders have information in them and were not empty. Files in 4 of the folders simply disappeared, and this has been happening for the past few weeks after I first format my USB. When I right clicked on the USB to see how much free space it has left, I saw that it is the same free space as the time I was at work, besides the fact that 4 files are empty now.

What is wrong with my USB? Is it messed up? How can I fix this problem?
:(

Sounds to me like you either have a voodoo curse, a hell of a virus on either your work or home pc or both or your flash is simply going kaput... It sounds like its the flash though. I'd get a new one.they're under a hundred bucks now for 4gigs

Is it just with this particular flash drive with the problem (have you tried other flash drives?) or does this problem reoccur with other drives?

I think I'll get a new one, since this one I have has gone cookoo

I haven't tried any other flash drive, I'll buy a new one today probably and hopefully I will experience no problem.

Flash drives have limited write cycles, approx 10k, although I have not yet been able to figure out what a write cycle is. Write a sector, file, a continous write from e.g. multiple file copying?

Try testing your flash drive with H2testw v1.4 and see what it reports - post the findings here if unsure.

Please be aware that the testing will wipe the data stored on the drive.

Alot of USB flash drives acting up / dying eh... I sense 2009 will be known as 'the year USB flash drives fail' :D
