My views : iPad 2

Why do you up major issues. I inverted commas?
You don't think the 20mb is a reasonably large issue?

As I said, Flash isn't huge as an issue as I thought. I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong.

But the 20mb issue is fairly large in my eyes. There's not much reason to get 3G if you're limited on what to download. You make it out like its no issue

Occasionally the flash only stuff is also to be honest a pain in the butt, but not painful that I would sacrifice battery life for (...and I really don't miss all the ads).

I have a wifi network at home linked to an unlimited plan (which all my devices connect to: computers, tablets and phones);
This was the most practical way for me to share a single data link with all devices (so yes, for me it's not an issue at all...)

On the road I have a 3g sim in the iPad (cell-c data bundle), which to be honest I rarely use (some emails, meetings invites, and web...)

How do you connect to the Internet from your computer + tablet? ...don't you use wifi?

I have wifi - but its still 3G. Its the 10GB 8ta special. Usually 10GB does last me, but this month I ran out about a week a back.

I had a spare data contract with Vodacom and had a booster installed on Friday (thanks Voda!) ... So I get awesome signal now.

Yesterday I pop on to get an app (280MB) and as my 8ta wireless is dead, I'll simply use my 2GB vodacom ... Wrong!

I get the 20MB limit - effectivly making 3G all but useless.

As I say - I won't get rid of the device and would buy it again as it suits my browsing needs. Flash isn't an issue and some other issues can be worked around.

The 20MB limit is a major one though :/

Not sure I understand, excuse my moment of stupidity ;-)
Surely you connect the vodacom sim to the wifi router in the same way as the 8ta sim; and then in both cases the iPad would connect to wifi

If iPad connection is wifi, then there should be no limit?

Sorry don't understand the issue?

Yeah also confused, if you connect via wifi the limit should make no difference regardless if the connection beyond the wifi is 3G or ADSL

Summary of your "major issues"...
  1. iOS doesn't support flash and never will, hence any media not specifically converted will not play (youtube included)...
  2. 20mb limit for downloads over cellular; in the US the cellular providers insisted on this (have you seen the cost of cell data in the US), hence the limit. Also possibly because Apple felt some users needed a set of safety wheels e.g. I want to sue Apple, because I have a ~$5,000 cellular bill for downloading games, HD movies, etc...

For the flash, there is a couple of Youtube Video's that is not available and to be honest I dont know why Apple simply didnt opt for a prompt method. I use it all the time on Android. By default sites load and play html5, only when not available will it show a Adobe Flash icon in the frame. If I select it it will ask me if I want to load the flash, rest of the time its not running or loading.

I doubt the 20 MB limit comes from US Cellular, as there are plenty of Android applications that goes way over that. I think its more about primary storage vs secondary on Apple's server farm.

I'm sure the limit is AT&T's doing. Remember that they also imposed the no mms thing and a bunch of other things because of their creaking network.

The Vodacom SIM is a miniSIM - and I can't put it in the router. The only device it fits into is the iPad.

Is the a miniSIM modem or adapter? In that case, I can remove it from the iPad and use it in the wifi router.

I humbly apologize it seems we have to thank AT&T for that....

AT&T To Limit PlayStation Vita’s 3G Downloads To 20MB Per File

When it launches, the PlayStation Vita will be available in two models — 3G (capable of both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity) and Wi-Fi-only. For the Vita’s 3G service, Sony have partnered with AT&T in the U.S.

Similar to 3G limitations on other devices like the iPhone, AT&T will be placing a 20MB file size download restriction on the Vita’s 3G downloads. What this means is that you’ll only be able to download files of 20MB in size (or lower) at a time over 3G.

This restriction doesn’t apply to the system’s Wi-Fi connectivity. Downloads over Wi-Fi can be of any size, which means you’ll be able to download full games over the PlayStation Network. Retail Vita games will come on 2GB and 4GB cartridges.

Basically, when you try to access a link to a video that has not been converted to H.264 you get a message on the iPad "Could not load movie) -- It really doesn't bother me, i.e. if its something I really want to see then I access on my mac.

The limits were requested by AT&T; originally the iTunes store could only be accessed via wifi, then when Apple wanted to open this to edge/3g, AT&T based on not be able to manage the previous unexpected load requested a limit to the download i.e. 10mb, which Apple recently revised to 20mb.

Android never experienced this because they never reached the mass numbers at a specific point in time that iOS devices have i.e. they've had less impact on the cellular networks. Even Google's statement at the recent senate judiciary meetings supports this.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying Android is crap; I'm rather saying that Android unit numbers are made up by a different user base that appears less likely to utilize the network; hence the networks have not requested a data limit.

Aaah makes sense now -- I have a spare plastic adapter that makes this easy (converts mini to standard); don't use it, so you are more than welcome to it if you like.

Where can I get one of these adapters? I'm not to bothered about the limit on downloads but if I don't manage to use up my 3G cap, I tend to start downloading just to use the cap, so I'd like to be able to pop the mini sim back into my stick for those last day of the month YouTube sessions.

While on the topic of YouTube, does the iPad have a YouTube app like the iPhones and if yes, does that app also have issues with files that are larger than 20mb?

Ps love how the fnb special has got people talking and sharing everything they know, I always read up before buying something but have never read as much as I have now while waiting for mine.

I got the adapters with a sim cutter I bought in 2010, so no idea where to get more... I have 2 so you're welcome to have other one; I'll keep the other one just in case Dolby wants one.

Don't think there is a problem with Youtube videos larger than 20mb; never tried to be honest. Congrats re you iPad btw, sure you'll also have some "fun" times getting to know the quirks both good and bad.

Btw with many of the google services (like news, youtube, maps, ...) they have created web apps which sometimes work better than the apple equivalents; the youtube web app imo is better; as it allows you to control whether you receive the HQ (720 or 1080 version) vs the 240 or 360 version. The built in Apple youtube app always downloads the HQ version which on a cell link can be very slow.

To add the youtube web app as a icon; just open the www.youtube.com page in safari and then click on the action button (to the left of the address dialog) and choose "add to home screen). It'll then add a youtube icon to the home screen, which for all intensive purpose works like an app, and you have the control of movie size.

Dont think there timing could have been better.

Many people was hoping to pick up iPad's with Xmas bonus's. This gave them the option to get it sooner + use the bonus for something else.

Thanks droid ill let you know, I see if I can't buy my own as my brother will most probably want one for himself. I think I'll enjoy it as I'm a bit of an apple fanboy since getting my iPhone last year. Glad to see that Dolby is enjoying his... Its not as bad as the h8rs make it out to be.

Hope everyone is watching discovery now?

No problem (it's there if you don't come right), Google has some suggestions (~R20)
